The Rules
First, the administration would like to formally welcome you to HoM. We're glad to have you and we hope you enjoy your stay here.
HoM is rated PG-13, parental guidance is advised.
If you choose to post something rated higher than PG-13, you must place a warning in the topic description. If you've already created the topic, PM an admin to make the change. Do not post explicit content before the tag is added.
Starting out...
1.
Both canons and originals are accepted. You can develop them on your own,
their future is for you to decide, but their past is their past. Originals are yours and yours alone; do with them how you please.
2.
Canon characters are very important to the board and the plot, so if you choose to play a canon, please intend on being active. Our idea of active may be different from yours, but we consider activity to include posting in any threads you're involved with in a few days - a week, at most -and logging on regularly. We do, however, understand that real life comes before RP, so breaks aren't looked down on. If you feel the character is simply too hard to maintain, take a leave of absence or give up the character completely.
3.
Always use the template provided. As your character develops, the board as a whole would like to know about it. The character biography helps to give other members a general idea of what your character is about and lets them know how their character would react to your character. Some people like to plot before actually role-playing and we're okay with that, but bios are necessary to do that in some cases.
4.
If you don't already have a general idea of what your character looks like, we suggest finding a playby. However, playbys can be both helpful and harmful. Let them be helpful to you; if you have no idea what you'd like your character to look like, choose a playby and base their looks off of that. A playby can be an actress, a model, a musician, or a reality star - any type of celebrity is acceptable, but make sure the person you choose to portray your character suits their age: does Angelina Jolie look like a fifteen year old? We didn't think so. =P
5.
Post your RP sample in the appropriate area for approval before roleplaying. The only exception to this rule is the avatar claim, the questions, comments, suggestions, and concerns thread, and any other out of character forums.
6.
If you haven't posted your application seven days after registering, your account will be deleted. The only exception is if you give us a legitimate reason for not being able to post it and let us know
before the seven days is up. You can do so in the absences and returns thread. This doesn't at all mean that we don't want you here, but we do want our members to remain active and for others to be able to join. If you're not posting, you're taking up a valuable character that someone else could be playing.
Please follow this rule.
Character Biographies
1.
No one is perfect - give your character some flaws. This doesn't mean they have to be a terrible person or be horribly disfigured, but at least make an attempt at a realistic character.
2.
Elaboration is unbelievably helpful. There's no need to rush, seven days should be more than enough time and you're allowed an extension. As you go along, be sure to add every bit of detail to your character as you can think of. Mostly, the bio should consist of how other people view your character and their small, barely noticeable quirks. Their inner-workings and things that other people won't notice don't need to be included.
3.
Correct spelling and grammar make things easier on everyone. No one is perfect; I'm sure I've made quite a few spelling and grammar errors throughout writing these rules, but we ask that you at least make some kind of an attempt. Firefox and Microsoft Word both work wonders - use them to make your writing the best it can be. If you don't have access to Firefox or Word for whatever reason, I suggest a beta reader. I, personally, will be willing to look over your biography for you should you be having trouble, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same.
Your avatar and other graphics
1.
No nudity or profanity of any sort allowed.2.
Make sure your playby looks the part. A celebrity who is forty shouldn't be portraying a character who is twelve - it's just not right.
3.
Don't stretch the page. Be sure your signature or banner doesn't stretch out all of HoM. Avatars should be no larger than 25 KB or 100x100 pixels.
4.
If you choose to use a playby, they must be a celebrity. Personal pictures, manga, cartoons, and drawings are unacceptable.
5.
Be sure to claim your celebrity. Otherwise, someone else might get to them before you get the chance and they're first come, first serve.
6.
If you wish to request graphics, do so in the graphics request section. If you use graphics from another site, such as RPG-D, RC&R, or any other graphics site,
give credit where credit is due. If they ask that you provide a link, you may do so in your signature.
When posting...
1.
No chatspeak. Please use correct spelling and grammar to the best of your abilities. Make sure your writing is understandable.
2.
Try to make your posts a reasonable length. In other words, no one-liners. Give the other member
something to reply to. You don't have to write a novel, so long as you get your point across.
3.
No god-modding or metagaming. You can't control another person's character. If your character throws a punch, you must check with the owner of the character they are attempting to punch before announcing that they hit their target. If the other member agrees to the slight god-modding, it's alright. If the person disagrees, you must change it.*
Out of Character Rules
1.
Be respectful of both the admins and other members. This is the ultimate rule (also the only one we have OOC) and if anyone is found to be disobeying it, the punishment
will be strict. This is a community and as a community, we should be respectful and polite to each other, regardless of how we feel. If you have a problem, approach an admin in a polite and respectful manner and it will be sorted out.
If you see someone being disrespectful report them. This is completely unacceptable behavior and I want to know about it. All reports will remain anonymous. Please send me a PM if you have a problem.
* If anyone could write a better definition of god-modding and metagaming, that would be wonderful. What I wrote doesn't seem to be all that great. Please PM it to me if you have one.
-Ginny (Marlene McKinnon, Regulus Black)
These rules can and will be changed at any time we feel the need. Make sure you're up to date and at least attempt to follow them. One mistake doesn't hurt anyone, but if we see that you're repeatedly disobeying the rules or completely disregard them, we will have to take some sort of action.
