overall personality: Before the War, Derrick was a perfectly normal boy, well, aside from the whole raven thing. But after watching his family die in front of him and coming to the New World, Derrick soon found himself obsessing over things. He found that everything had to be in order and he was just getting more and more worried. He didn't know it at the time, but he had developed an anxiety disorder, a speech impediment, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

All of these disorders have forced Derrick to worry over every little thing. Everything has to be perfect and in order, or he'll worry even more. Most of them revolve around even numbers, and Derrick has his own special rituals to help calm him down. Everything has to be clean around Derrick. He accepts that it can't always happen, but he still wakes up in the middle of the night to scrub down the kitchen.

After some researching, Derrick found out exactly what was wrong with him, and after some thought, he decided that he wouldn't tell anybody. Though if you really look it's somewhat obvious, Derrick does his best to hide his disorders, pretending he's just quiet and jittery. Mostly, he does this because he doesn't want to be a burden on his brothers. He knows that treating all of his disorders would put a strain on their already low finances, and he can't do that to his family, so he keeps everything wrong with him bottled up. It's not healthy at all, Derrick knows that, but there's nothing else he can do.

overall history: During the War, Derrick, his youngest older brother, his younger siblings and his parents went into hiding while his other older brothers went off to fight. When only Markus came back everyone was devastated. That was the event that started off his disorders.

Soon after, they went off in search of the New World and were attacked along the way. Derrick and his brothers managed to escape, but Heather and his parents weren't so lucky. If there was any hope of Derrick escaping the Homelands with his mind intact, it was gone then.

Once they reached the New World and the adrenaline and fear wore off, Derrick found himself getting more and more anxious. He was starting to obsess over the little things, and he kept worrying more and more over how clean things were. It was when he found himself waking up in the middle of the night for the sixth night in a row to find that he had cleaned everything in the apartment and set to work scrubbing the hallway outside that he finally admitted he had a problem. But his pride still prevented him from going to Markus. Instead, he took a trip to the library and found the disorders that fit his behavior. One in particular stood out, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

After self-diagnosing himself, Derrick considered telling Markus, but decided after researching treatment options that they simply couldn't afford it. So he kept it quiet. He developed the persona of a quiet and jittery young man, and for the most part, it worked. He still has his problems, but Derrick still refuses to tell Markus. He threw himself into psychology instead, and tries to deal with his O.C.D. the best he can.
