Physical
While she was living, and up until the time of her death, Lucy’s mother was always greatly admired and envied for her beauty. Being aware of her beauty she used it to attract many possible suitors, including Lucy’s father who, at the time of their introduction, was a young lieutenant in the British Army. Lucy has inherited her mother’s beauty.
Lucy’s complexion is fair. Her face has almost perfect symmetry; she has high cheekbones, which beautifully accentuate her other facial features, including her thin, aristocratic nose and delicate jawline. She also has rather startling blue eyes. When she smiles, which is often, her smile is very alluring. Her waistline is narrow – narrower, by comparison, than the waistlines of most of those women with whom she is acquainted, even when she is not wearing a tightly laced corset. However, her bustline is average sized. Her cheeks usually have a healthy pink glow to them, as she enjoys partaking in the fresh air and physical exercise, and does so regularly. She is not a particularly short woman, nor is she a particularly tall woman; however, the manner in which she walks – she walks with her shoulders back and her head held high – makes her appear slightly taller than she actually is. She carries herself with an air of confidence, ease and elegance about her.
By continually keeping abreast of what the latest styles from Paris are Lucy always manages to dress rather fashionably. In the past, she has been photographed for various ladies’ magazines because of her impeccable sense of fashion; the editors of these magazines have hailed her as belonging to the new breed of ‘modern’ women.

History
Although Lucy was born in London, England in 1881, she left for India on a steamship when she was eight years old after her father, a General in the British Army, was re-stationed over there. In India, she experienced greater freedom than she had previously experienced in England.
Between 1887 and 1893 her mother’s health, which had been poor to begin with, steadily declined until, on November 22, 1893, after a protracted period of illness, she passed away. A mere six months after her mother’s funeral her father remarried; the woman whom he remarried was more than twenty years her father’s junior, and less than ten years her senior. Lucy disliked her stepmother immensely; their relationship was founded on a mutual dislike for one another. While Lucy accused her stepmother of being conniving, her stepmother, in turn, accused Lucy of being childish and ungrateful.
Shortly after remarrying her father sent her back to England to be properly educated. For four years she attended a boarding school where the daughters of the upper and upper-middle classes were educated. Due to the quality of education that she received at this school, Lucy’s become a highly accomplished young woman. She is well versed in etiquette, French and German, the piano and ballroom dancing; she’s also rumored to be one of the best, if not the best rider in the county.
On June 11, 1897, tragedy struck her life once more – the angel of death revisited her doorstep: her father was shot and killed during a minor skirmish between British soldiers and Indian nationals in India. After her father was killed she went to live with her aunt and uncle in London; in a way, it was like a second homecoming for her, as London is the place of her birth. When she first arrived in London her cousin, Mr. ________ Wyatt was home on holiday from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst where he was training to be an officer in the British Army. Even though there is an age difference of four years between them, as children, they used to be playmates. Eight years later when they met each other again she was sixteen and he was twenty, but they resumed their friendship almost immediately; he helped her to overcome the grief, which she felt over loosing both of her parents. While he was in India they corresponded frequently through letter writing; when he was injured she traveled to India alone in order to accompany him home.
Her paternal grandmother is a friend of Mr. James Carlyle’s aunt; they belong to the same social circles. Lucy met Mrs. Eleanor Carlyle briefly while she was in Bath visiting this grandmother of hers; however, she’s never met her husband, Mr. James Carlyle, before. Lucy and her cousin, Mr. _______ Wyatt received an invitation from the Carlyle’s inviting them to spend the hunting season with them at their manor house in the countryside. Lucy, believing that the fresh air of the countryside will be better for her cousin’s health than the smog covered streets of London, accepted their invitation; she convinced her cousin to do the same. However, she is unaware that Mr. __________ Gyford, whom she used to be engaged to, is in any way related to Mrs. Eleanor Carlyle, much less that he is her younger sibling; how will she react if, or when she learns about their family connection?

Personality
Lucy has many strong personality traits; perhaps her strongest personality trait, however, is her free-spiritedness, although it may also be her adventurousness, her independence or even her liberal mindedness. For Lucy, life in Edwardian England is often stifling, unbearably so. As such, she often feels the desire or need to defy certain social customs. For instance, Lucy defied social customs by traveling to India by herself in order to accompany her cousin who had sustained fairly serious injures while serving in the British army back to England. This act of defying these social customs requires bravery; but although she is brave, she is also impetuous.
Lucy’s enthusiasm for life is apparent simply in her manner of being. She enjoys attending lavish dinner parties and ballroom dances; it is a lifestyle, which she has grown very accustomed to. However, she is not a vain person.
If she had been born a man, there is no doubt in Lucy’s mind that she would have become a politician – she is charismatic, clever, diplomatic and witty. She has many personal convictions. Among her personal convictions is her belief that women should be given the vote; she also believes in the importance of not only educating girls, but in the importance of educating girls as thoroughly as boys.
Despite the fact that it’s been almost three years since she was engaged to Mr. _________ Gyford, she has not been romantically involved in another relationship since then. One reason why she has not accepted a third proposal of marriage is because she has come to realize how greatly she values her independence; she knows that if she were to be married she would have to sacrifice her independence. Therefore, she doesn’t know if marriage is in her future because she doesn’t know if she will ever be willing to sacrifice her independence, even for love. Lucy also fears the possibility that she may misjudge her would-be suitors’ intentions and thus, allow herself to be deceived again, as she was by Mr. __________ Gyford. However, those people whom she trusts, including her cousin, Mr. __________ Wyatt, she is fiercely loyal to.
