Today was the day of decision. Today a decision would be made, regarding Cassie’s future. Cassie was nervous, today it would be decided weather or not she would ever become a mage. She was twelve and she still hadn’t acquired any magical abilities. Most people got their powers at the age of seven, so, today Cassie was going to an interview with the elders to have them make the decision of weather or not she would ever get any magical powers. If she wasn’t to attain powers, she would be outcast and forced to leave the village forever.
Cassie followed the attendant up the stairs, even this mere servant has some magical abilities, she thought. When they got to the conference room, and the attendant used an unlocking charm to open the door. The door was spelled shut to prevent any outsiders from getting in without authorisation; it also prevented Cassie from entering on her own. There were three people sitting at a table, they were on one side of the table and there was a chair on the opposite side where Cassie assumed she was to sit. “Cassie?” Asked a woman with curly grey hair “Yes, that’s me” “Sit down, then we can talk” said the woman Cassie did as she was told, and sat down as the attendant left, she didn’t have a very high opinion of servants, she had been raised to believe that they were worthless. “So, have you ever had premonitions or heard things?” Said the man sitting next to the woman “No, never” was the reply that Cassie gave The man frowned, “Are you sure?” he said. Cassie absently looked around the room, she saw that the third person, a woman with red hair who didn’t look much like an elder was writing on a piece of paper. She must be a secretary, thought Cassie as she opened her mouth to answer the question “No, I have never had premonitions or heard things, and just so you know, it sounded like you were asking if I heard voices in a ‘are you a crazy person’ way” The elders looked puzzled, the one whom Cassie had assumed was a secretary opened her mouth “as the leader of the elders, I do not believe that you are truly one of us, I believe that you are an outsider” “But that’s impossible!” cried Cassie, not only was the whole idea ridiculous, but she had only been here for ten minutes! “There is a record of it happening about fifty years ago, a girl, much like you, was found to be an outsider. She did have magic, but it was a very evil form of magic, necromancy is what she could do. So we banished her, she was never heard from again. At this time, there was no real concern for if one didn’t get any magic. But after the girl left we brought in the test.” “And what does this have to do with me?” “You have the feeling of death around you” This was the answer that Cassie had been expecting. “I believe you are a necromancer. You must leave this town as soon as possible” Cassie stood up, she walked out of the room. She had decided that she would leave and go as far away as possible, as soon as possible. She ran down the stairs and through the hall of the gigantic elder’s building. She got into the carriage that was waiting for her and told the driver to take her home. Cassie arrived home and ran into her room without saying anything to her mother or her father, she got into her room and lay down on her bed and began to cry. She had to leave, she was only twelve and she wasn’t ready to leave her home, but she had to. If she didn’t the authorities would come and forcefully take her from her home. “Cassie, honey” called her mother through the door “How did the interview go?” Cassie knew what the question really was; the real question was “How long did they give you to leave town?” “I have to leave now” said Cassie between sobs “Why?” asked her mother with concern “I— I’ve been declared a necromancer” cried Cassie Cassie grabbed some of her clothes and threw them into a travelling bag. She opened the door and ran past her mother into the front yard; the carriage was still there, the driver however, was gone. Cassie threw her bag into the main compartment and got in the front. She had had horse ridding lessons when she was younger and was good with animals; she rode until she was almost at the edge of the village, she then stopped the horses and removed her bag from the carriage. Cassie walked over to a nearby house and knocked on the door. “Who’s there?” asked someone from within “My name is Cassie, I’ve a spare horse and a carriage, would you like them?” replied Cassie “What’s the catch?” said a woman as she walked to the door “There’s no catch, you can even pick which one of the horses you want” Cassie and the woman walked over to the horses, the woman stepped closer to them and picked up one of the feet of the brown horse, this one was Cassie’s favourite. The woman then looked at the other one; this time, she released the horse from the carriage and walked it around for a bit. “I’ll have this one” she said “And the carriage?” asked Cassie “Yes, that too” With that the woman left. Cassie untied the second horse and attached her bags, which she had unceremoniously dumped on the ground. She then climbed onto the horse and started to ride. It felt like she had been riding for ages, she knew that it had only been ten minutes, but it really did feel like longer. I wonder where the neatest town is, Thought Cassie, What if I never find a town or a place to live? I could die—, no! I’m not going to think like that! I’ve got to stay positive! After banishing all of the negative thoughts that continuously crept into her head, Cassie took the time to look at her surroundings: she could see a forest and in the distance a town. Now that she had a target: the town, she decided to give her horse a rest. Cassie realized that she didn’t even have a name for the horse. She thought about it for a while; and decided on Blossom. “So,” Cassie said to the brown horse “what do you think of the name Blossom?” Blossom nodded her head in what Cassie hoped was approval. Cassie dismounted and as she took her bags form the horse then dropped them, she wondered what the town that she was headed for was like; and a young boy of about her own age was creeping up on her. He reached for her bag; as Cassie noticed him, the only problem with the fact that she had noticed him was that it wasn’t registering in her head. She looked around and began to wonder what it was that she could hear, she could deffinatly hear something, she just wasn’t sure what. To be continued... Comments welcome ~Eva -------------------- |
