Mute

I used to know a young girl,
that I had nicknamed Beth.
She quickly became addicted,
to a drug called crystal meth.

She didn’t do it to fit in,
to become one with the crowd.
It was because pain and turmoil,
surrounded her like a cloud

Her father was an alcoholic,
he began when his wife died.
This was clear as day to Bethany,
since it was an act he didn't hide.

She never would invite her friends over,
for fear what they might see.
What if they saw his excessive drinking,
or witnessed her getting beat?

Instead she kept silent,
and never said a word,
staying mute as to make sure,
her screams were never heard.

She turned her life over to drugs,
to escape from all the pain.
Once she did, my Bethany,
was never again the same.

She was mute, telling no one,
and now she never will,
for, six feet under, in a black coffin,
her body is now sealed.
