Safety issues at Duke/Durham

This thread was created by Concerned Duke Parent on our old board. After we moved to this board, Concerned Duke Parent did not register and did not claim this thread. I will keep the original post below, but as of today (February 11, 2007) I will start maintaining this thread myself.

There appears to be some interest in this topic. Therefore, I decided to create a new list here. The list will contain links to related articles and other reference information on campus security at Duke and on safety issues in Durham. In the long run, I expect this list to look something like the FODU “Links to media” page.

a. Articles (by most recent date)
Student allegedly raped off campus Feb 12, 2007
.
to be filled out
.
Recent Duke grad hurt in hit-and-run Oct 1, 2006
Preventing tragedy, Duke style Sep 28, 2006
Duke forbids exotic dancers Sept 20, 2006
Break in assault reported at Belmont Sep 13, 2006

b. Reference Information (alphabetical)
Campus Security Statistics, US Department of Education

originally posted by Concerned Duke Parent:

The purpose of this thread is to collect useful information, articles, and documents relating to the safety of Duke students on Duke Campus and in Durham. I will start modestly, but intend to collect as much information on this topic as possible. I want to help in my modest way to all prospective Duke parents on this important issue.

I will seek help from the moderator from time to time, because the format I have in mind will require some technical assistance. If you come across articles on this subject or other useful material, please drop me a line here (i.e. issue a reply under this topic) and I will add that material to this collection. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I don't know if this will help, but I remember hearing about a female student on the central campus that went to do her clothes and she was sexual attacked by an unknown person she did give a descrip. to the police. This was back in August it was reported on in the chronicle. The person did get away

I just read the harold sun piece and they said it took them four minutes to dispatch a unit to the young girl. The police should have done that as soon as the call came in, not wait four minutes. I would ask the police why it took so long. If this was a Durham resident " I mean someone there 24/7 365" the police would have moved a lot faster. Buscasue it is Duke U they seem to have took their time in responding.

I watch the good morning america show and they do a piece every week on how to keep yourself safe. I can inquire on if the person they use might want to help give a thought or to, too this topic for all Duke students.

Interesting article in Duke Chronicle yesterday. Apparently, it is not illegal to hire strippers in dorm rooms or in off-campus housing.

I would love to get some statistics on how many parties involving strippers are held at Duke per year. And, in other colleges too. This may shed some light on the question of how unusual or how routine it was for the Lax team to have that party.

I have a feeling I will not like those statistics if I saw them. Something to think about -- for all of us parents.

Another Duke student dies from alcohol - he is nat a lax player

http://www.dukechronicle.com/media/storage...kechronicle.com

When is Brodhead going to do anything to prevent these deaths, and stop blaming the lax players as though they were the bad apples of the lot. Something stinks in Duke, and it is not the lax team!

Latest tragedy at Duke

There are some weird things happening at Duke. The place is falling apart under the leadership of Dick "Coward" Brodhead. I fear that it will get a lot worst before it gets better. Parents will have to be crazy to send their kids to Durham in Wonderland. The Duke board will be totally stupid and crazy to keep Dick "Coward" Brodhead as the president for much longer. He has become the laughing stock of all higher education. It's time for him to move on.

Here are two more articles relating to safety (or lack of it) at Duke. Yes, I would say Brodhead is doing a heck of a job protecting these students.

This article talks about the dangers and safety concerns for Duke students around the East campus and Durham. Basically, they live in a very dangerous place.

This is not directly related to Duke. But, it may still be relevant. NCCU Is only a few miles away from Duke.

Those close to this case describe it as a death from alcohol consumption.

Rajesh Das
"A fourth-year Duke medical student passed away Dec. 6 in Raleigh. The cause of his death is still unclear."

"Rajesh Das, 26, was simultaneously pursuing a degree at the School of Medicine and a master's degree in biomedical engineering in the Pratt School of Engineering."

-------------

What a huge loss! Can you imagine what his parents and other loved ones must be going through? I wish there was something we could do to prevent the next Rajesh Das tragedy from happening? As parents, how can we be so helpless?

DukeMom - it would be extremely difficult, sadly, to do much in the case of a 26-year-old. A place to start, though, would be to figure out some way for us to get across the idea that we are intolerant of excessive and unsafe drinking while simultaneously supporting alcohol awareness and education. Not quite sure how to do that - I had a wine tasting group for a while but that's been closed down for a few years. I am not anti-drinking, but I am anti-drunk...
