Hi Bitman
Take a look at the posts in questions and also in the other sections, especially regarding ballast and leaks. The main problems specific to Evo's result from rain water leaks. Check for damp timber inside, lift the floor boards and check that the ballast isnt bulging, if it is, either walk away or knock a grand off to do it yourself (plus all winter on your knees in the bottom of the boat) or about 5 to have a yard do it! While under there check the timber framework for damp and rot. It would seem that the main and fore hatchs are the favorite places for leaks, but windows, genoa tracks and almost anything else going through the deck are possible. Talking of decks, when you walk around the deck, check for soft/ springy areas these could be the result of delamination between the balsa core and the deck moulding, easy enough to repair in some areas, almost impossible in others! Obviously these are all extra to the normal checking of a boat, sails, motors, cushions etc. A new set of cruising sails costs around £1500, £2500 for laminate so check that they are up to the use you intend. Hope this helps. Stuart. |

Do not be put off!
Evolutions sail really well, they are fast for their size and reasonably forgiving when over pressed in a blow. I did frighten my wife a little when we broached with the kite up in the last race of Torbay week. It was blowing a 6 but the other two Evo's put theirs up so I had to (LoL) it wasnt up for long and we were far from the only boat to have a big broach. Evolutions are great fun for the money, just buy the best one you can find / afford. |
