So here it comes…
Earth has always had the idea that it is a planet all on its own, wallowing in ordinary humanity. Even when aliens smashed a ship through Big Ben the people didn’t blink. They didn’t realise anything unusual happened at all. Cybermen tried to take over, and humans were convinced easily that it was a mass hallucination. The Master had them enslaved for a year, and only a broken paradox managed to bring everything back to normal, still with no one any the wiser.
Torchwood is down to most of this, a secret organisation beyond the police and the government, regulating alien activity on the planet’s surface. Captain Jack Harkness – an immortal human from the 25th century – lead the cream of humanity, all to pay homage to the Doctor, a lonely Time Lord who lost his homeworld and his people.
After the defeat of the Master, leaving his body to burn at the end of the universe, both Torchwood and the Doctor were going to try and return to their own normalities, believing that everything would end up a little more quiet through space. Nothing is ever as it seems…
The Master is alive and well, using technology to keep his signal attached to the Doctor’s TARDIS and return to Earth, hiding through the other Time Lord’s grief. In fact, he’s that well that he tried to steal the TARDIS again, and subsequently destroy the matrix because it wouldn’t respond to his commands. Trapped on the planet, he made sure that the Doctor would stay there too, so he could eventually exact a truly befitting revenge…
Now, the rift in Cardiff is reacting to those Time Lords roaming the surface, allowing more alien threats entry to Earth. The Doctor – now forced to work closely with Torchwood – is the one leading them, trying to work out exactly what is happening and how to stop it. All the while, the Master plots, waiting for the perfect time to strike and dominate once more…
