What do you all think of the main contenders? Do you think Barak Obama will become president, and do you really think his race is an issue? I ask this because on another site there's a member who is a Black American and is quite anti the whole idea of a Black president. This is what she says (the spelling and grammar are unique) -

"do you really think a blk can run this society?
do you realize how america is already turning for the worst because of how ghetto-fied it is turning.i hope i die soon.this is just not right.and may i ad i have never voted and i thought this would be the year for me to vote and that was to be for hil.i could never vote for a man.so its not a blk/white thing for me.but a white is way more intelligent than a blk man.just as a asian is typically brighter than all races.so im not just against blks i just speak the truth
facts are facts
so should blks be embarrassed when they say shyt like white men raped and murdered blks during the slave trade?eventho they dirty blk azz did not experience it?and its hard for me to believe white slave masters raped blk women more than likely theose blk female slaves was fycking the white man to become a house nygga instead of a field nygga.and based on statistic its more blk men that rape whyte women than vice versa.so those afrocentrics need to stfu
blks want to hate cracka's bout what happened 400 years ago.and i gag at you clowns for putting mandela on a pedestal"

She is now thinking of leaving the US to live in the UK, and has asked for tips on the best places for a Black pre-op transexual prostitute to ply her trade, but that's another story.

Do you agree with her? What are your thoughts in the candidates in general? Don't duck out of this one, the US is the most powerful country in the world and who ends up running the show has huge political, economic and social implications on everyone else who shares the planet with you.

Thanks

I haven't followed the candidates closely, because I've been expecting Hilary Clinton to end up winning. So I'm not familiar with Obama's platform.

It matters greatly in Canada who ends up President in the US mainly because of trade issues and the military situation. It's been Canadian soldiers who have been fighting and dying in Afghanistan, and Bush just sits back and smirks about how well the US has done and that Afghanistan is under control and no longer a problem.

Tell that to the dead Canadian soldiers and their families.

Obama's ethnicity (I despise the artificial term "race" -- we are ALL human) is of little importance here. Canada doesn't have the "OMG, a black man might win the presidency!" mentality. If he does win, we will acknowledge the historical aspect of the win, but we won't marvel at it or think it's the end of the world. Canada has politicians of all major ethnicities, and we've had a female Prime Minister and several female Governor Generals. So it's the same thing if Hilary Clinton were to win -- we would take note that it's a historic occasion for the US, and then we'd go on to consider how to deal with whatever new trade/military considerations this might bring.

Really, it matters more to us if the US President ends up being a Republican or Democrat, not if he/she is black, white, oriental, latino, purple, or plaid. But if Obama or Clinton does end up being elected (or at least the final Democratic candidate), we would say approvingly, "Well, they're finally starting to grow up."

What scares me is the tendency a lot of people have to turn suddenly conservative when they get in the little booth, making them less likely to vote for a "first": a black or a woman. That would basically screw the Democrats.

I really hope Huckabee doesn't get any further, because I think he's really dangerous. The last thing the country needs is more faith-based government.

I'm starting to get a little pissed off, too, since I'm looking at returning to the states during the next two to four years. If I wanted to end my days under a theocracy, I'd immigrate to a Muslim country.

If he were to win down there, I'd be doing everything I could to persuade people here to please not vote the Conservatives back in (or at least not a majority government). Right-wing governments in both countries mean stressful times ahead.

I was watching Jay Leno last night, and one of the guests was Bill Maher. He said that Huckabee sincerely believes the Earth is only 6000 years old. 0o

My sympathies to whoever he usually represents (I assume he's some sort of politician at present). Our own cabinet minister who's in charge of public safety (a post created after 9/11) is also a Bible literalist. And before he went to Ottawa as a federal politician representing Penticton, British Columbia, he used to be a provincial politician representing my own riding. I've had the pleasure of telling Stockwell Day off in spades when he came knocking on my door several elections ago, begging for votes. The guy is an idiot, and I feel sorry for anybody condemned to have him as their MP (unless they actually voted for him).

I assume that if Huckabee gets any kind of post, he'd be pushing the right-wing fundamentalist agenda in everything?

 No, seriously, that is how she types all the time, although it's usually all in capital letters. Here are some other pearls of wisdom on this issue -

1. in response to a poster who said Barak is mixed race and is as white as he is black -
"so why do he call himself a blk man?why do he think like a muslim.why do he hold his father on a pedestal eventho his daddy abandoned him but the mother white side is who raised his ungrateful blk azz.he is a muslim thats fycking why
you people are being lied to
and he going to ruin america
THANK you ALL FOR BEING PC"

2. in response to a poster saying that she was a self-hating Black -
"ITS NOT BOUT ME BEING ANTI-BLK SWEETS IF THAT WAS THE CASE THAT I AM SO ANTI BLK I WOULD BE BUYING SKIN BLEACH CREAM TO MAKE MYSELF LIGHTER LIKE MOST BLK TRANNYS DO.AND I WOULD NOT TAN MYSELF (lighter skinned blks are not that cute to me).ALL I AM SAYING IS BLKS HAS A AGENDA.AND THIS APE IS SO INTO HIS BIBLE
HAHAHA"

3. on the issue in general -
"it will never be a female president in America.Hillary has lost. And people you dumb azz cracka's(which btw make up over 70 percent) allowed for this shyt. You think a bush was terrible you just wait til a blk man get in office you fools.Blk folks have a agenda.I wonder if Obama do win will we still here that lie that america is so damn racist....Im sure we will esp when obama screw up."

4. in response to claims she was raising the race card for the sake of it -
"no dear im just not pc.but like i said we will see how well ur blk president will be and see his true agenda.im just going to sit back and enjoy the downfall of america.than i am positive all of you whites that does not turn into wiggers by a blk man being in office cringe at america turning into a fycking 3rd world"

God, I love her.

Huckabee is a nightmare, but it seems to me that most of the GOP candidates have suffered some sort of traumatic brain injury somewhere along the line. The Democrats on the other hand are all trying so badly to find that one niche to fit into that will convince all of us that they have the plan to fix what Bush f**ked up so badly that its hard to tell who exactly they are. Its a good thing that we all already know that Hillary is a bit of a shrew that nobody likes, and who sublimated her anger at her husband for political power. That just leaves Edwards (a trial attorney, no f**king chance) and Obama, who nobody knows, not even himself.

Another cavalcade of dipshits, as far as I can tell. I certainly am not voting Republican again for a long, long, long time, so I guess its going to have to be the Democrat with the strongest base of support on election day. Yes, I'm voting parties. Though I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and for some moron independent to spring up and steal votes from the democrats again. Maybe we can convince some white-power/God Squad nut-job to do the same thing to the conservatives this year. :D

Well, I cringe at the thought of the US turning into a third-world country, but I think that's far more likely with an openly religious wingnut at the helm. (Let me make this clear: the race and gender issues really don't interest me at all and won't affect how I vote.)

Another point, if we're being completely honest: the only thing that sickens me more than a self-hating black is a white who buys into the whole "sins of the fathers" routine. Got no time for either.

I have to go with Obama in this one, but would be more than happy with either Edwards or Clinton. Edwards shares almost every ideal that I hold, but I don't think he really has a shot...and his wife is very intelligent and down to earth.

Health care is the biggest problem and after watching Sicko I hope things change soon. The damn Republicans are a joke.

As Huckabee goes, he isn't as conservative as many of the other candidates.....he actually supported the Chips program and has many seemingly leftist views. Even though he's a nutter with his religion, he wouldn't be as bad as Romney. Some of the things these two go back and forth on about religion is like watching two lobotomy patients fighting over a checkers game during playtime.

I would rather have somebody who could change their minds about something than a "stay the course" type of leader.

Preferably somebody who doesn't have a financial interest in the military, intelligence, or computer sectors. <_<

I'm completely unfamiliar with most of the Republican candidates, so couldn't say. For the Democrats, I would probably pick John Edwards.

Lieberman is a douche. He'd be a terrible candidate for any office no matter how you look at him.

Eh. I suppose I'll be voting in this election(my first time!), but I'm not really pleased with any of the candidates. Surprise!

I'm more conservative, from an economic standpoint, at least, but all the Republican candidates are jerks. I especially dislike Giuliani. Huckabee wouldn't be too bad, but he really is too religious. The rest of the GOP candidates wouldn't have a fighting chance against any of the Democrats.

Obama is...uh...idealistic, but maybe that's what we need.

I don't believe in God, but may He help us if Hillary wins. I'd be that desperate for help.

Edwards isn't too bad, I guess, but he doesn't stand a chance, I think.

I don't know. I wish Bloomberg would run. I'd vote for him, even if he were running independent. I'll probably end up voting for the Democratic candidate, unless it's Hillary, in which case, I'll be voting against her, not for anyone else.

Did anyone watch the NH debates last night? By the time I tuned in the GOP candidates were done, but I really liked the format. As for the Democrats, I thought that only Edwards and Clinton has anything substantive to say. I heard mostly platitudes coming out of Richardson's and Obama's mouth.

Could you expand on that Phaedrus? I'm curious to know what any recent past republican president has done to make you feel this way? In the last thirty years, it shouldn't be hard to find an example.....and judged on the state of our nation, I hope you can find one.

I bought several used books at the library the other day, one of which is called the “Media Monopoly” which basically presents an Orwellian POV towards our various sources of entertainment and information (including books). Although in the Western world this mostly done by huge multinational corporations (some of which may be more powerful than some entire countries on the planet) in places such as China, North Korea, Iran the government controls all forms of media to control the population. That being said perhaps an accurate source of information can be found in books that were published some time ago. For example has anyone here read the Federalist papers? IIRC it was required reading in schools in the 1800's however I'd be surprised if it wouldn't be beyond the reading comprehension level of many college freshmen these days. The other book I bought is called “A History of the United States Since 1945” by Oscar T Bark, Jr and was published in 1965. Here is an excerpt:

“At home, there has been a struggle between the so-called liberals and conservatives over the extension of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, whether it be referred to as the Truman Fair Deal, Eisenhowever Modern Republicanism, the Kennedy New Frontier, or the Great Society of Lyndon B. Johnson...Another plaguing issue has been the increasing power of the Federal government, which many Americans insist is verging more and more toward a welfare stated at the expense of the rights of the several states.”

In terms of presidential politics I suppose I would vote for someone who had libertarian philosophy of smaller federal government and giving more power to the states.
