40 years ago this month, Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album was released. The album includes the classic "Somebody to Love" (click to listen to the entire album!).

After all I (and so many of you) have experienced, perhaps it's no wonder so many religionists rail against that "evil" rock and roll. The opening lines of "Somebody to Love":

When the truth is found to be lies
and all the joy within you dies
don't you want somebody to love....

Here's a link to "A Shogun Named Marcus". It used to be my handle on FACTNET. I can't believe it's been 14 years since I picked up this little gem. Listen and watch at: Clutch

Not too controversial. I'm not even sure what they're singing about, although the vocal delivery is sort of Pentecostal.

A SHOGUN NAMED MARCUS

If you thought it was boring in Jordan
Then come out here for a day
And by the way, the name is Marcus
But if you like, you can call me Sensei
Well the emperor is in the pig sty
And the geisha is in the shack
And you better believe I'll hold them there
Till the feds, they pay me back

Kamikaze backbone
Nine iron spitfire
Continental samurai
Oh my lord
Brown sugar, sweet potato
Sourmash, baby back
Redneck romance
Bless my soul

Hari Kari and combines,
Come dancin' with me
Hari Kari and combines,
Won't you come dancin' with me?

Yes, I'm a New World Samurai, and a redneck nonetheless
Yes, I'm a New World Samurai, and a redneck nonetheless
Yes, I'm a New World Samurai, and I can read your mind
Check it out, I'm like a buzzbomb
Yes, I'm a New World Samurai,
Check it out, I'm like a buzzbomb

So Beebopalloobopawopshamboo
And domo arigato if I got to
Bebopaloobopawopshamboo
And domo arigato if I got to
Bebopaloobopawopshamboo
And domo arigato if I got to
Bebopaloobopawopshamboo
And domo arigato if I got to

Just a song I really like, I guess about the passing of time and perhaps love lost....

I had to turn the volume up but this is a good rendition. I don't like the purple light on Eddie Vedder.

Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind a Counter In a Small Town

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
All these changes taking place, I wish I'd seen the place
But no one's ever taken me
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

I swear I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me, you wouldn't recall, for I'm not my former
It's hard when, your stuck upon the shelf
I changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
I just want to scream hello
My god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are, and here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade away

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade

I am posting this one in honor of Boss' most recent post on the "To all you who are still in GGWO" thread.

Pete Townshend, the brilliant poet behind The Who, recently (last year) wrote a song entitled "Man in a Purple Dress."

See the screens behind Roger and Pete in this video? (This is an acoustic performance -- not heavy rock and roll. Roger singing, Pete playing an acoustic guitar. So even if you're not a rock fan, you should be able to handle this). I saw them perform this song in concert a couple of months ago (EXCELLENT concert, by the way!). The screens behind them displayed numerous images of all sorts of religious leaders, dressed in the clerical garb representing many religions from all over the world. I think the only one they missed was the fundamentalist preacher boy in his suit...

Man in a Purple Dress
How dare you wear a robe to preside?
How dare you cover your head to hide
Your face from God?

How dare you smile from behind your beard?
To hide the fact your heart's afeared,
And wave your rod...

How dare you be the one to assess
Me, in this God-forsaken mess?
You, a man, with a purple dress
A man in a purple dress.

You are all the same
Gilded and absurd.
Regal, fast to blame.
Rulers by lost word.
Men above men, or prats
In your high hats.

You priest, you mullah so high
You pope, you wise rabbi
You're invisible to me.
Like vapor on the sea.

How dare you? Do you think I'll quietly go?
You are much braver than you know.
For I can't die.

Your staff, your stick, your special cap.
They'll protect in Hell? What crap!
Believe the lie.

How dare you be the one to assess
Me, in this God-forsaken mess?
You, a man, in a purple dress.
A man in a purple dress.

When you place your frown
Between my God and prayer
However grand your crown
Or dignified your hair
Men above men, all prats
In your high hats

You priest, you mullah so high
You pope, you wise rabbi
You are invisible to me
Like vapor from the sea

I lovingly mock you noble lords
We all dress up to grant awards
I do that as well

I dare condemn your fashion sense
At least you're not astride a fence
That would not sell

But I will deliver this address
Your soul's condition don't impress
You, a man, in a purple dress
A man in a purple dress

IS THAT ALL THERE IS?
Peggy Lee

SPOKEN:
I remember when I was a very little girl, our house caught on fire.
I'll never forget the look on my father's face as he gathered me up
in his arms and raced through the burning building out to the pavement.
I stood there shivering in my pajamas and watched the whole world go up in flames.
And when it was all over I said to myself, "Is that all there is to a fire"

SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

SPOKEN:
And when I was 12 years old, my father took me to a circus, the greatest show on earth.
There were clowns and elephants and dancing bears.
And a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our heads.
And so I sat there watching the marvelous spectacle.
I had the feeling that something was missing.
I don't know what, but when it was over,
I said to myself, "is that all there is to a circus?

SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

SPOKEN:
Then I fell in love, head over heels in love, with the most wonderful boy in the world.
We would take long walks by the river or just sit for hours gazing into each other's eyes.
We were so very much in love.
Then one day he went away and I thought I'd die, but I didn't,
and when I didn't I said to myself, "is that all there is to love?"

SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

SPOKEN:
I know what you must be saying to yourselves,
if that's the way she feels about it why doesn't she just end it all?
Oh, no, not me. I'm in no hurry for that final disappointment,
for I know just as well as I'm standing here talking to you,
when that final moment comes and I'm breathing my lst breath, I'll be saying to myself

SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

Leave to the guys in Clutch to come up with something timely. Here's the lyrics to Shiny Master Caddylackness

Mr. Shiny Caddylackness

Has your child completed his or her suspicious activity booklet?
Don’t let this summer go to waste.
The enemy is preparing their children are you?
Time to show them who’s boss.
Moloch demands fresh blood to maintain the appetite of his mechanical heart.
Will you sacrifice your first born like Abraham would his Isaac?
Will you sacrifice your first born like Abraham would his Isaac?

Tell me, why Dick Cheney's underneath my bed?
Hell no that ain’t cool!
Tendin’ to the lips of a wooden head.
No sir, that ain’t cool.
Come on now take one for the team.
Stick it to the man, stick it to the man.
Raise the dagger high above Isaac
and drive down as hard as you can.

Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
Stand fast, upset the system, so many tomorrows to sell.
Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
Stand fast, upset the system, so many tomorrows to sell.

Mother, mother, don’t want to work on the farm no more.
Father, father, don’t want to wear you uniform.
Mary, Mary, keep me safe and comforted.
Father, father, raise that dagger above your head.

Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
All goes exactly as planned so many tomorrows to sell.
Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
Stand fast, upset the system, so many tomorrows to sell.

Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
All goes exactly as planned, so many tomorrows to sell.
Shiny Master Caddylackness, haloes suit you well.
Stand fast, upset the system, so many tomorrows to sell.

All you ready to prove your love to the Lord?
I said are you willing to prove your love to the Lord?
As Abraham handed down his first born on a stone,
Do you wonder what is right and what is wrong?

Shiny Master Caddylackness
Shiny Master Caddylackness
Shiny Master Caddylackness
Shiny Master Caddylackness

Here's another, perhaps not yet a classic from Gnarls Barkley

Crazy

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Well, I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

But Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably

Cheers,
Sibiricus

Almost seems perfect for Convention:

http://www.stonerrock.com/jukebox/Corrosio...one_Breaker.mp3

STONEBREAKER

Scorn by your petrified eyes
Reborn with unjustified lies
With no apologies shown,
The demonology is known
I think we're dying too fast
When the fury receeds
Only the angels believe
It couldn't last couldn't last
It wouldn't last it can't last
Trial! No denial! Guilty by the hand
Of the power hungry man
You're unholy again
Just ask the stonebreakers [x2]
Yeah!
On high with the wicked on the mountain
On high with the wicked on the moun tain
Torn by the need to violate
Mourn as the pure congregate
There's no need to commit
Just burn the heretic
There's nothing gained once again
It was lies all along
A disguised siren's song
What a sin what a sin what a sin!
Thieves disbelieve guilty by the hand of
The power hungry man
You're unholy again
Just ask the stonebreakers [x2]
Yeah... alright!
I'm on high I'm on high I'm on high
Just like the wicked on the mountain
Torn by the need to violate
Mourning as the pure congregate
I'm on high I'm on fire
I'm unholy
Just like the wicked on the mountain!

TOUCHING ONCE (IS SO HARD TO KEEP)

Leaving all their thoughts behind
Passing over timeless wastes of ecstasy
Freedom strangled at the source
Takes the only charted course
That leads them home
Their bodies move towards the dawn
The light in which a nation born
Can only hope, and only weep
Their passion may be growing weak

How was alone, recall me if you can
I feel I am lost within you
Many times within the sound of emptiness
A light has shown deep in each others soul
Keeps them apart, a love now makes them whole
Fractured memories tearing at all their dreams
Made life and living a faded scene

To give a name locked in despair
Makes chances of a lifetime course across your eyes
To give and get, and yet return
Emotion smoulders, starts to burn in harmony
They lay within a ruined shell
Searching for the time to tell
That he who followed endlessly
Does not exist, can never be

How was alone, recall me if you can
I feel I have lost within you
A part of what is held inside a deep regret
Taking over all that a hearts request
Answered by cries from a wilderness
Found forgotten lying in deeper sleep
Touching once is so hard to keep

In emptiness, a light has shown deep in each others soul
Keeps them apart, a love now makes them whole
Fractured memories tearing at all their dreams
Made life and living a faded scene
Taking over all that a hearts request
Answered by cries from a wilderness
Found forgotten lying in deeper sleep
Touching once is so hard to keep

All right, look... before this gets out of hand... Some time ago, I went dancing with a friend. Another ex-er who is out of the cave. (And if you know me, picturing ME, dancing must already have you rolling on the floor howling!) What I didn't know when we went dancing was that the paparazzi were lurking, and caught some of it on video.

I think that's enough of an expose of my artistic skills for the time being. No singing from me!

John, I am so dissapointed in you. That isn't you on the youtube, unless you've been on an Atkins' diet and dance with stilts. You have lost our trust after being an elder on this website. I don't know what to say. The only way to make it better would be to write a letter of repentance that can be pinned as one of the official documents. But really, we would need to see the fruit of your life to prove to us that you are really sorry. That would mean that you would really have to dance and sing on a video. Forget the bag boys. Maybe Reader can help you.
