I would be interested, Ryuha, as soon as I reread it and try to grasp the concept a little better.

Since there's still some confusion, I'll break down a few key concepts and such that will hopefully clarify things.

Village: The uniformed majority. The 'good guys,' this team makes up more than half the players in the game, but they don't know who is and isn't on their side, at least in the begining. They win if all the players on the mafia team(s) are eliminated, along with any independent players who are hostile towards them.

Mafia: The informed minority. While they are outnumbered, they know exactly who is on their team and can organize more easily. Their goal is to infiltrate the village, convince the villagers that they're on their side, and slowly eliminate them one by one with night powers that allow them to eliminate players, as well as by trying to control the lynch. They win when all the villagers are eliminated, as well as all members of any other mafia teams, and any independent players who are hostile toward them. Some games have a single mafia of fair size, while some games that can support it have two slightly smaller ones that are opposed to each other as well as the village.

Neutral: Not ever Mafia game has neutrals, but they're a fun element of games that do have them. Neutrals tend to have interesting powers, but the main defining characteristic is that they win independently of the village or either mafia (and don't have to be dead in order for any of the teams to win), and can thus make an alliance with whatever team seems to have the best shot at winning, trading protection and information for a vote and their powers. The method by which they win varies from character to character and game to game, but it's often simply to survive till the end.

Wolf/Serial Killer/Sylar There's usually only player (if any) that falls under this category per game. The wolf is a rogue player who has a killing power and whose goal is to eliminate everyone else and be the last/only player alive. As the game goes on they have to be more and more careful about how they go about this, lest the trail of bodies lead back to them and get them lynched. A rare variant, the Sylar, gains the powers of players he/she kills, but in most games can only use each once, for balance purposes.

Basic progression: The game alternates between phsases called days and nights. During the day, every member who isn't being restrained by a power has the right to vote for one other player. The player with the most votes at the end of the day is eliminated, this is called the lynch. This vote is transacted publically in the game's thread.

During the night, most players have powers they can use to further their team's goals, increase their chances to win, or otherwise progress the game. The thread may or may not be open for small talk and assorted comments at night, but day or night, players can communicate with each otehr through back channels, such as PMs, AIM, IRC, or other chat or messaging venues. This is the main difference between forum Mafia and the traditional party game, as in the latter, night is strict quiet time, where most players don't have much to do anyway.

I'll gladly answer any more question anyone has as well.

I'd be all for it. I've had good games with smaller groups in the ~12-15 player bracket, I would be interested to see a basic game or with more localized thematics in future iterations if it meets success initially.

Haha! I am in the process of writing role PMs for the game (shooting for 18 players, so everyone help me get people excited for this ^^). I decided, to help build up some enthusiasm, to put together a sample and post it here. Note: This PM will not be used in the actual game, but it is typical of the PMs I'm making.

QUOTE
Dear -user-,
You are Ryuha Nara

You're a light tamer with a strong will and a love for a good fight. Nothing excites you more than a good fight, and there are plenty of those to be had in this conflict.

Once per night, you may send AoRyuha a PM saying ‘Night X - Training match with (user),’ with (user) being the username of one of the players in the game. You'll have a fun, challenging match with them that will use up all their energy, preventing them from applying their night power that night.

You also have the following item: Humanoid Spirit of Frost. An ancient and mystical item that allows its player to transform into the skillful Sorcerymon. The holder of this item may forego their normal night power and send AoRyuha a PM saying ‘Night X - Freeze (user),’ with (user) being the username of one of the players in the game. The targeted player will be frozen, preventing them from posting in the main thread the upcoming day. If they do post, as soon as they finish, they'll crack and fall apart, eliminating them from the game. This does not prevent their last words, it simply punishes them. If they make it through the whole day without posting, they'll thaw out and be none the worse for wear.

You win when the threat Insomnia poses to the Digital World is stopped, and the Temple’s mad campaign draws to a close.

And yes, for those who weren't already aware, the game and its roles will be DD-themed ^^ Again: That PM will not actually be used, it's simply an example.

Okay peeeeeeeeps, Role PMs are finished and so is the interest-gauging phase. A bit drier than I hoped, but here's hoping we get more response in this phase, eh? ^^

It's now, officially, Sign-Up time!

But first, our background...

Times in the Digital world are tough. The battle between the light tamers, led by Zeal and his allies, and the dark tamers, ruled by Insomnia and dominated by Ogre, is trudging along slowly. Progress for either side comes in choppy, irregular spurts. That's all about to change though, both sides are finally preparing a massive campaign to wipe each other out.

A third party has emerged in the conflict though, the priestess and acolytes, and worshippers at a little-known temple are bogged down in the sadness of their pasts. Their wish for solemn peace has driven them to shut up both of the sides in the war, by any means nessecary.

Before anyone can do anything though... they'll have to figure out who the hell their enemy is. Things have become oddly jumbled in that last data storm. In the meantime, they've established a few rules of conduct that they follow loyally during the day, and completely ignore come nightfall. It's Mafia time in the Digital World.

--------------------------------------------------

Sign-ups agogo. Post the word 'In' in this thread in bold to be officially signed up. Everyone who wants to play must do this. Whatever else you do or don't say, here or elsewhere, is your business, but this is where you go to make it official. And for those who are hesitating or think they're not interested: Pretty please with sugar on top? wink.gif
