Title: The Character Shuffle Challenge

RyuRyu-chan - August 26, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
((First of all, no, I'm not jumping into an AU thread while leaving my responsibilities elsewhere hanging. I'm just getting this started because I think it's interesting and I want the thread to exist. The first post can't technically be used to play anyway, given the peculiar rules of the variant.

Now, what this is is my attempt to translate a classic tabletop RPG game type into a forum game format. In said game type, the participants each make a character, or pick one from an existing campaign, and then they throw them in a stack and everyone takes and plays any character other than the one they contributed, as faithfully to the creator's vision as they are capable. I think this would do well here, serving as both a profitable creative writing exercise, getting us out of our respective bubbles, and a chance to see how other people truly interpret our characters. In the spirit of the latter, the less advice you give or ask for in the playing of a character, the better.

For the sake of simplicity, and attracting as wide an audience as possible, the setting for this thread will be DD's setting and the characters each player contributes will be their existing registered characters here. If you have two characters you can choose to only put one into the pool, but you can only take two characters from the pool if you put two in, in order to keep the numbers balanced.

As I said, I won't actually be joining in quite yet, as I have responsibilities elsewhere, but anyone who wants to take a crack at Ryuha or Tsuki is welcome to do so, and I will gladly answer any questions anyone has. My explanation was probably wildly inadequate anyway, and questions will help hammer out the details of the explanation.

It would be wise to start with a few OOC posts of throwing characters in, so there's a big enough pool that people don't feel intimidated joining. Good luck everyone! ^^))

Zander Steele - August 26, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
(Umm, I don't know if I really want to join in, but I might change my mind. If it's allowed, and if someone REALLY wants to try out being Zander and/or Rayner, then be my guest)

EDIT: (It's not that i'm not up to the challenge, but I am positive that I am no good at emulating someone else's character's personality. I've tried before and I bombed it.)

Vn70072 - August 27, 2008 01:07 AM (GMT)
Well, sign me up. I'll drop my characters in the pot, and I'll be hopefully ready once things get rolling.

Koenjinn - August 27, 2008 11:39 AM (GMT)
Feel free to use Koen, Kijun, Furunii and Shirasaki -- and if you want to, any of my NPCs. ^-^

Otterly Lost - August 27, 2008 11:15 PM (GMT)
^^ Cyrus and Barty along with their digimon are in the pool too.

Schmegkopf - August 27, 2008 11:24 PM (GMT)
What the hey, consider Julien, Icarus, Zoe, Macio and I in on this action. Please don't hurt me when I mutilate your characters, is all that I ask. ^^;;

RyuRyu-chan - September 4, 2008 08:40 PM (GMT)
*pokes* Well, I thought this might get going on its own, but I don't object on giving it a greenlight of sorts so people will know it's time to go.

Whoever posts first IC gets their choice of characters, but don't feel strapped down to your initial choices, as long as you make a post with a character you've taken, you can switch to another free one if you really want to. ^^

Of course, this thread is still open for new people to join, and always will be.

EDIT: Well, I realized some people involved might prefer random assignment of characters instead of choose-your-own. I don't know which is more popular overall though, so I'm attaching a poll to this thread, once the votes are in, I'll remove it to minimize the disruption.

((Oi. *rubs eyes* Let's see what I can do, hm? Hopefully this is the place I'm supposed to post it.))

"I'm not sure of zis, Icarus.."

A meek boy looked anxiously at his avian counterpart, uncertainty obviously in his body posture. His hand wrung at the bottom edge of his shirt, thoroughly crinkling it and coming no close to easing his nervousness. The cause of such distress? The tamers milling about in the slightly cramped room. There were quite a few hanging about, all with their digimon and all seemingly enjoying themselves.

Why they were here, however, was a complete mystery. Some random text message just seemed to bring them all together. Something about meeting a guide or something.

"Cool it, Julien,"the Falcomon said in a dismissive and confident-bordering-on-arrogant tone of voice,"Whatevers going on here is probably not anything I can't handle!" The grin Icarus offered did nothing to ease his tamer's nerves.

"You sure about that?"

The speaker was a Ryuudamon, furry body standing close to a rather tall boy with light blue and silver eyes. The boy seemed friendly enough if a little quiet. Altogether he seemed more comfortable in the large throng of people than the portly Julien did.

Nevertheless the Ryuudamon's pessimistic words brought a frown to Icarus's beak. "Yeah, I'm sure about that, fur face,"he said, crossing his feathery arms over his chest in annoyance. Who did this dragon think he was, afterall?

"I-Icarus... Perhaps he iz right..."

This only seem to ruffle Icarus's feathers more but he was cut short by the taller boy stepping forwards and holding his hand out in the universal greeting; a hand shake. Julien took it with short bought of fidgeting before smiling.

"Hello there,"the other boy said with a nod of his head,"I'm Rayner Steele and this is Ryu. You are...?"

"Icarus and Julien,"the ninja bird answered for them, voice mildly clipped as he watched Ryu. Ryu merely ignored him, more interested in a long bodied creature slinking through the crowd of people.

His diverted attention also caught the other digimon and the two tamers eyes as well and the group watched with mild confusion as a blue otter came scurrying up towards them, green eyes a little sleepy looking in shape and nose rather large.

It finally reached them and stood up tall on its little haunches and grinned. "Hi! I'm your guide!"

((*lame*))

Koenjinn - September 6, 2008 03:21 AM (GMT)
OOC: Two words: Craptastic post. Alright, post done. Don't ask me why the duo's there and why Ryuha is in Hybrid form. >,> Even I don't know.

IC:

"Aww, come on, Zackie!" Aura chirped from atop the teenager's head.

Zack flinched. Crowds weren't really his type...the sun beat down from the skies, as more and more people brushed past him in the busy bazaar. The Tsukaimon smiled, really enjoying the crowds and the multitude of items on display.

"Zackie~ Look over there!" she stated, pointing a stubby arm towards a stall manned by a hooded person. She tugged playfully at Zack's hair.

The teenager nodded as he walked over to the curio shop despite his disliking crowds in general. It wasn't that crowded after all.

It turned out that the hooded person was no ordinary hooded person at all. A Sorcerymon looked up, cold blue eyes staring intently at the teenager that arrived with a Tsukaimon. A closer look revealed to Zack that the hooded person was not really a hooded person, but instead, was a Sorcerymon.

"Go away. This isn't for you," the Wizard Digimon stated coldly, icy eyes looking into Zack's equally cold green eyes. Ryuha, as the Sorcerymon was before, took one last stare at Zack before turning around and leaving the confines of the shop, and couldn't help but notice that he had a Digimon.

Aura seemed vaguely disappointed. "Why the face?" she asked, smiling despite feeling that they had somewhat played a part in the leaving of the Sorcerymon. "Zackie, let's go some place else~" smiled the purple bat Digimon.

-------

"Snotfish," a normal Ryuha called out as soon as the last of her icy cloaking had melted away, waiting for the all-too familiar scuttling of the Ganimon. "Let's go."

Adras poked his head out from the comfortable cushions. "Neeeeee-chaaaaaaaaaan, why do we have to go so quickly? We're barely even here. Half of me isn't even here yet," he argued, dragging himself reluctantly towards his Tamer.

Even though he was awfully lazy, he couldn't help but feel that he needed to be with Ryuha. She was his Nee-chan after all.

"C'mon, Onii-chan!" an Agumon chirped, fiddling with a shiny hairpin as she bounded towards Adras energetically. "You're so cute when you look at me like that," beamed Hitami as her Ganimon companion shot her a dirty glare and attempted to bury himself in some cushions, clothes, whatever, as long as he didn't have to hear the Agumon's voice.

Kotaro leaned against a wall, sighing softly, closing his eyes a minute later. They weren't worth his time.

Vn70072 - September 6, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
((Here goes!))

"Luna-chaaaan," a girl's voice drew out, one bleary eye being rubbed sleepily by the back of her hand. "What are we doing here?" She might normally be in better spirits, not to mention a bit more energetic, as she stifled a yawn with her other hand, but last night had been the full moon.

"Sorry, Tsuki dear," The Lunamon before her on the table said. "It's not like I mean to get like that on full moons, but I just can't help it sometimes." Indeed, it had been another fiasco, this time as she attempted to clean the apartment with a vacuum cleaner.

While the silver-haired girl leaned forward in her chair, chin propped up on a hand, on the verge of nodding off, Luna's attention was on the nearby exchange between Rayner, Ryu, Julien and Icarus with interest, all the more intrigued by the sleek, blue-furred mammal growing near.

Content that her tamer wasn't going anywhere for the moment, Luna lightly hopped down to the floor, skirting a passing tamer she didn't get a good look at, "Er, excuse me, but guide to what?" she asked, turning four into five in the group before the otter.

----

"Maybe we could go inside and grab somethin' to eat, eh boss?" asked a small purple-skinned demon, ears like horns, red bandanna about his neck, matching gloves over his three-fingered hands.

Three lurked outside the firelit tavern on the lonely stretch of road, veiled in the shadows of the night. "Sorry, Bael," Zander said gruffly, shaking his head. Clad in a black trenchcoat, he leaned against a dying tree. Arms folded, he seemed to be waiting for something.

Glinting in the faintest of light nearby was a small cyborg, the young man's remaining partner. A black disc imprinted with a face, lined with a gold pattern akin to a gear. Devoid of legs, and with only small silver gears for hands, he seemed to have some means of hovering several inches off the ground.

Schmegkopf - September 6, 2008 05:26 AM (GMT)
((*sighs deeply* I'll do my best... Cyrus Black, Kyra Evans, and their partners, prepare to be desecrated!!! 0_0;;))

"Ah, it's nice to attend a get-together like this once in a while, isn't it Hang?" a black-haired, fair-skinned youth asked of his partner upon pulling his lips away from his straw.

"I s'pose," the less-enthusiastic Kudamon replied with a wry grin. "Though needing to keep Doofus outta trouble kinda puts a damper on it."

"Haaaa-ng!" was the indignant moan her comment was met with, a bright eyed and bushy tailed canine looking straight up at his comrade. While undeniably fond of Hang, this Labramon was unabashed to admit how... fiery she could be. "I'm not gonna mess this up, I promise!" He stimutaneously wagged his red tail and donned a focused frown, the effect ultimately more comical than determined and brave.

Hang responded by surpressing a giggle. "I'll take your word for it, Roofie-boy," she said playfully, right before Cyrus met her with an affectionate rub behind the ear with a fingertip.

"There's nothing to mess up," he modestly pointed out. "Whyever we were called here, this is nothing more than a nice little gathering of Tamers: a chance to finally take it easy and get to know each other."

"What if... IT'S A TRAP?" Rufus said deliberately overdramatically, eyes widening and fur bristling - all part of an ongoing attempt to look courageous and alert in front of his mink-like love interest.

Cyrus was quick to realise his second partner had a point, blue eyes clouding over with doubt for but a second, before Hang interrupted.

"I'm not worried about that. Leppamon and Dobermon can beat any old trap" - here Rufus beamed at hearing Hang speak of the two of them so inclusively - "and besides... at least one Tamer here is on our side." She gestured to the subject of her words the only way she knew how: with the bell-like adornment on the end of her tail.

It didn't take long for Cyrus to discern who Hang meant: after all, silver hair on an obviously teenage girl would be enough to make any Tamer stand out in a crowd ten times this size. "Tsuki," Cyrus quietly said to himself as his smile widened.

The boy - with Hang in tow as always - and Labramon parted, the former coming face to face with the human girl slumped in a chair, the latter taking his place beside the Lunamon. With guilty pleasure, Rufus took note of the apparent abscence of Tsuki's newest comrade, the rather snobby Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi: there was a Ryuudamon in the room, yes, but the way he was sticking close to some older boy instead of Tsuki (plus the slight difference in scent) put the Labramon's mind at ease.

Confidently but gently Cyrus placed a palm on the Japanese girl's shoulder in an effort to draw her focus. "Hey Tsuki," he cooly greeted her, his blue eyes meeting hers.

"Nice to see you," Hang piped up, heart flooding with pleasent memories of the girl who'd known her when she was little more than a bouncing ball of fluff and energy: a far cry from the stubborn and independant Kudamon she knew now. In any case, all three were glad of an oppurtunity to speak with their friends Tsuki and...

"Luna! Hi there!" Rufus exclaimed, tail awag as he greeted the Lunamon he knew from little more than a positive first impression. But that was just it: positive.

Something else caught his ruby eyes, however, when he noticed the object of Luna's attention: a creature Rufus had enver seen before, but whom he felt like he knew somehow. "And... hi to you too?" he said to the otter, initially unsure what to make of the brightly-coloured Earth animal.

"So what's the plan, princess?" the Renamon said, curiously leaning over his companion's shoulder with the flexibility of a snake, and the sly smile of the fox he was. "Charge in brandishing Black Gears, or wait for the festivities to wind down, then strike?"

"The latter." Her cool and airy tone belied the unease with which she twitched her right knee and fingered the hilt of her beloved weapon, currently sheathed in the black leather of her belt's holster. "We get him alone... then hit him with everything we've got." For all her hesitance, there could be no doubt she was, on some level, looking forward to seeing her blade adorned with the blood of he whom she'd once considered arrogant - now "tretcherous" would be a better word for Zack Knight if you asked Kyra.

"Thought as much." Bishop's tail flicked, its owner brisk with anticipation and confidence as he watched the immenant clash unfold in his mind's eye.

Not quite so eager about the foursome's plans for the evening, however, was the Dokunemon curled pensively in their leader's black-trousered lap.

"Maybe this isn't the place at all," she mumbled through her violet beaklike organ, pretending to be talking to herself but deep down hoping Kyra heard her. Truthfully, maybe this isn't our task at all would've been a more accurate portrayal of her thoughts, but she was certain speaking them would shatter the girl she'd worked her whole life to save from being broken.

"I'll take my chances, fuzzball," Kyra responded, half playful, half stern as only Kyra could be. "We may never get this kind of oppurtunity again, and if the worlds have taught me one thing, it's that not seizing the moment is a recepie for misery later on." Her cocky tone masked the pang of pain her heart felt as she spoke right from it.

"True enough," spoke the fourth and final member of the mostly-dark team, a Commandramon seated beside Kyra on the little bench wrapped around a tree less than two minutes walk away from the venue of the little get-together being staged that day. "Vanguard?" he perked up, a questioning intonation laced into his typical matter-of-fact tone.

"Yes, One?" the caterpiller turned to her newest, but possibly most like-minded, teammate.

"While I did - and do - have my doubts about Kyra's assignment," he said with some trepedation, "I am confident she will do nothing without reason. Perhaps the only way for those reasons to become clear" - even to her, One considered silently - "is to go along with it, up to a certain point," he advised, the normally stoic reptile placing a reassuring emphasis on the last five words.

"Yeah, well..." Vanguard attempted to lace together an argument against her once-enemy, but with Kyra's cold glance beating down on her, found it impossible. "Um, I guess so." For now she'd go with the flow, however turbulant, until the crucial moment to save one her Tamer didn't want saved arrived.

Closing her eyes and allowing herself a shadow of a smile, Kyra's feelings towards her two stronger partners suddenly became extremely mixed - but it faded quickly when she glanced back at the reassuring likeness of Bishop, who in turn offered her a flashy smirk.

"I can't wait," the fox drawled.

(My turn! Lemme see what I can do. *prepares for worst*)

(Since I am no good with other languages ^^

Onaka-ga suita – I’m Hungry
Okkeii - Okay)

Another Ryuudamon walked through the door of the establishment, seeing all the other people in the room with his one good eye. A young boy no older then 7 rode on the Rookie’s beck, his arms around the lizard’s neck. Shirasaki closed the door behind him, heading towards a wall and setting his passenger and tamer down on the floor “Lot’a people here. Wonder what’s goin on?”

The boy looked around too once he was back on the floor, staying close to the Ryuudamon, “Saki…” Kijun said, pulling on an armored claw, “Onaka-ga suita.”

“I know, kiddo.” Saki replied to him shortly. He knew that the kid hadn’t eaten al lday, and heis stomach was growling back angrily as well. He looked around, spotting a buffet no far from where they were standing, turning his non-scarred eye to the his tamer, he said, “Stay here, an I’ll get ye some grub.”

“Okkeii…” Kijun said before watching Saki walk off to get them some food. He stood there, unsure of what to do and scared by all the other tamers who seemed so social.

--------

“Well isn’t this a fluke?” Barty spoke, halfway to himself really, standing in a corner as other people were getting in on the conversations. He shifted the glass monocle hovering in front of his one blue eye into a better position. All the people here seemed to have the same kind of watch that he did, and they were all just as shiny.

“With all that yakking, bet it wouldn’t be much trouble to nick them right off their arms.” He took the trouble to say it a little louder so the Impmon standing next to him could hear. Nymphadora felt like being even more harsh then usual with all the unfamiliar faces around. Her eyes narrowed towards the crowd as she said, “Why don’t you stop thinking about stealing things for once and figure out why we’re here, idiot!”

The smile on Barty’s face only widened at that, and he looked down at her, his mismatched eyes giving her a look that said “How could you think about that at a time like this?”

“Calm down, dearie. I couldn’t steal them, as much has I want to. Can’t even get mine off, can I? He proved his point by tugging on the D-ban, which was ever so firmly clasped to his arm.

Nymph rolled her eyes noticeably and walked away from him before he got her involved in any more of his heists. Barty, meanwhile, continued to watch, content as ever to stay out of the conversation till he saw it fit to speak.

(…..O.o…*feels weird*)
