Welcome to Desamarai
|
Moon Phase
|
Two thousand years ago, there were two gods: Rayzaek, the God of Sun and Isiliah, the Goddess of Moon.
They were, of course, merely humans, humans with strange and unprecedented powers, humans who found each other and bent the whole of Desamarai to worship them.
They were lovers, they were saviors, they were the heralds of a great change, they could not last forever.
In the face of a kingdom falling apart, their love faded and they fought. They fought and retreated to their homelands- Rayzaek to Maikor and the south, Isiliah to Deida and the north. Here they split Desamarai into two, here they forever altered the world as they knew it, here they sewed seeds of discord to grow eternally. Here they died.
Here they continue to shed blood.

5/18/09 Lyra here! We've had a recent influx of members, which is wonderful. (:
I've just added some new boards for the Isellean and Pyndian Oceans. It's time to sail the high seas, eh? Indulge yourself in underwater towns, sea serpent mating frenzies, human sacrifices and shipwrecks, etc.!
In other news, I'm hoping to start up the plot proper sometime. But I can't until we have some Desarian Royalty and some proper religious leaders. Soooo...

Maikor The city of Maikor is built around the Suphan Bay and on the Kokang Delta. Oftentimes it is called the City of the Sun or City of Gold, as it is the "capitol" of sun-god worship and it has numerous, majestic golden temples that reach into the sky. It is also a city that thrives on the trade of spices, cloth and fruits, with many ships crowding the Suphan Bay.

Chiang Dor Jungle The Chiang Dor is an immense forest- hundreds of miles from the top to the bottom. The sister rivers, the Sangra and Changra, run through it to the sea. The people living in the jungle are medium to dark-skinned and wise in the lore of its plants and animals and hidden paths. The ruins of old cities and temples crumble here and unknown creatures lurk in the shadows.

Kaimbar Swamp In the shadows of the Adayam Mountains, the Kaimbar Swamp hides. The tall, sturdy trees of the rainforest fade to slender cypresses wreathed in webs and moss, oftentimes growing straight out of the murky water. At nighttime, mysterious glowing fogs drift around and are suspected to be the ghosts of lost travelers who drowned in the deceiving waters of the swamp.

Adayam Mountains The Adayam Mountains are very impressive. They scrape the skies, peaks oftentimes disappearing into the clouds. They also are known for their waterfalls, many of them in the Arudyen Valley, which are very high and sometimes have caves hidden behind them. The main dangers in the Adayam Mountains are the avalanches and the dangerous creatures hiding deep in the mountain range.

Ahazar Desert If not for warm currents and winds from the south, the Ahazar Desert would be a cooler place. However, it is extremely hot, with the sun always blazing down on the hot sands. It is easy to get lost here and eventually die in the ever-moving sands. Only the most experienced travel here and survive, and it is difficult for even them.

Elymian Fields Only the southern-most parts of the Elymian Fields reach into the Lands of Sun. Anything past the Ruvar Lake (aside from Samaisor) is more populated with followers of the Moon Goddess. The Elymian Fields are fertile and many farmers make their living here growing wheat and corn.

Deida Deida is oftentimes called the City of the Moon or the City of Silver, for many Moon worshippers live here and pray nightly at the temples decorated with gleaming silver. The people in Deida are nocturnal, living in lamp and moon light. Deida is a pale city, with solemn buildings of marble held in by a tall city wall. It makes its money off trade of metals and stones, mined from the Rose Hills and Grogorium Mountains. It is also well known for zoos and circuses and its annual carnival held in the light of the full moon.

The Ice Wastes and Grogorum Mountains Dominating the northern tip of Desamarai are the Ice Wastes and the Grogorum Mountains. The Ice Wastes are mostly barren and almost always buried in snow. Harsh winds blow across the flat land and blizzards are common. The Grogorum Mountains are smaller than the Adayam Mountains but have a wider variety of creatures, most dangerous.

Hyosald Forest The trees of the Hyosald Forest are tall and pale, as if fed by the moon. They cast shadows by day and shine in the light of the moon by night. It is a place full of life, with snagging undergrowth and many lurking creatures. People fear the Hyosald yet they love it, for its borders are a good place to hunt for game.

Isle of Syfia Off the east coast of the Lands of Moon, a long island stands from the sea. It has high chalk cliffs battered by the waves and pebbly shores. The Royal Family often comes here in the summers, to escape the heat of the south. It is a beautiful island, especially under the full moon.

Rose Hills Gentle curves on the horizon, the Rose Hills are a quiet place. They are named so because roses grow rampant here, curling around ruins of ancient cities and towns. Also growing are long grasses that sway in the wind and wildflowers, some of which wax and wane on the light of the moon.

Elymian Fields Most of the Elymian Fields are dominated by worshippers of the Moon Goddess. They make a good living here, growing corn and wheat on the fertile land. Farmers closer to the Samaisor oftentimes travel into the city to sell their crops.

The Ramparts Samaisor is unquestionably the largest city in the known world. Four times the walls have had to been rebuilt to make the city large enough for the expanding population. The newest walls were built only ten and five years ago, and the space behind them has yet to be filled. The ramparts are lined with trebuchets and guards, prepared always for an invasion and they hide most of the city from view and harm.

The First Wall The very centre of the city is where it first started, history hiding behind the wall that originally surrounded Samaisor. It holds the Palace and the temples to both the Sun and Moon, as well as those temples for more obscure religions.

The Second Wall When the population of Samaisor had grown past the First Wall, another wall had to be built. The area between the First and Second Walls is full of the mansions of the rich. The streets are clean but the buildings are intimidating- tall and beautifully carved with gargoyles and patterns of roses and pictures of the Sun God and Moon Goddess.

The Third Wall Eventually, the population of Samaisor grew beyond the Second Wall and thus the Third Wall was built. Now, this area is a place for middle-classed citizens- blacksmiths, tailors and other craftsmen. The main market is here too, always bustling with shoppers and craftsmen and farmers, buying and selling.

Marakai Marakai is the capitol of Echydnis- a country that believes in neither the Sun God or Moon Goddess. It is a city of rough gray stone, cloudy and rainy. It would depress most Desamarians, but the Echydnisians enjoy rain and storms. The Echydnisian Royal Family lives here in a tall gray palace and the bloody, mysterious Bone Cult makes their headquarters in the city's catacombs.

The Catacombs Underneath the streets of Marakai are the ancient, shadowy catacombs. They are works of art, ornate and beautiful yet still supporting the city above. In the darker tunnels of the catacombs, the mysterious Bone Cult performs their violent and frightening rituals, often taking innocents from the streets above as sacrifice.

Rovos Plains The majority of the land in Echydnis is flat and full of waving grasses. The Rovos Plains are fertile but mostly treeless- wood is a luxury in Echydnis as it usually must be imported from Desamarai. The Rovos Plains are known for moody weather- storms come often and clouds hang in the skies for many days.

Gulva Though the town of Gulva is small, it is very important. It is positioned on the tall cliffs lining the Damari Bay. These cliffs are riddled with secret caves, used by pirates as hideouts. Echydnis receives wood, silks and tropical delicacies here, at the same time deporting stone and gems from the Opellevaan Mountains in the north.

Opellvaan Mountains The Opellvaan Mountains are most famed for their volcanic activity, which is not seen anywhere in Desamarai. They are mined for stone and gems, mostly diamonds, opals and rubies. Some villages close to the Opellvaan Mountains worship the two main volcanos- Mt. Larroxo and Mt. Vesuvan- for they are followers of the old ways.

Saya Cove On the eastern shore of Echydnis is the Saya Cove. It is a place of high magic and it is mostly avoided. It has many caves, some filled with water and others not. Nymphs of the sea, nereids, make their homes in the caves, their singing echoing out into the cove. They oftentimes have small battles with the merfolk that live in the deeper areas of Saya Cove, fighting over certain caves reputed to have healing magicks. During the spring, sea serpents come here to mate, arriving in the masses, eating the occasional merperson, nereid and sailor.

Fsthaeda Reef In the south, along the western coast of Chiang Dor is a great reef, spanning many hundreds of miles. It is beautiful, with bright coral and many colourful fish. The few boats traveling on this side of Desamarai must avoid the reef, as they are quickly stranded on the shallow shelves of coral, sometimes raided by the mermaids of the area.

Hennerfore Island In the middle of the Isellean is a somewhat triangular-shaped island. Its climate is temperate, the island is forested in deciduous trees and is usually quite clear-skied. Its peacefulness is but apparent- the island has been heavily fought over by the Sun and Moon, much blood has been shed over it. The two religions live on opposite sides of the island in a shaky, cold truce.

Mt. Tsellom and Aepar These two islands in the southern Isellean ocean are odd ones. One is a volcanic island, almost completely uninhabited, the other harbours a village full of a strange reverence for the mountain, worshiping it as a god.
