It is the year 1530 and King Andrew Sherbourne has been on the English throne for eighteen years. He inherited the throne from his father at age twenty and just two years before then, married his brother's widow, Queen Margaret (Princess Margarita of Spain). The couple has created a happy and prosperous country, closely allied with Spain, which has kept the forces of Scotland at bay and managed to establish a relative peace with France. Just two years after the couple rose to power, the queen gave birth to a girl that they named Katherine. However, since then all of the queen's pregnancies have resulted in miscarriages and still-births. The fact that King Andrew does not yet have a son to take the throne upon his death is beginning to wear on him and his love for the queen. Queen Margaret, at the age of forty-three, is beginning to worry that she will stop bleeding before she has the chance to give her husband and England a son. With all of the major lords of the kingdom shoving their young and beautiful daughters into the king's presence, he can't help but consider divorcing his wife of twenty years. However, such a decision would not bode well with the Pope or the Spanish monarchs. It is impossible for King Andrew not to desire the young girls who are paraded in front of him everyday and has therefore taken a few mistresses, but what he really needs is a legitimate son. Will the King be able to risk excommunication and destroying the alliance with Spain in order to fulfill his desires and make a son for England?
