Title: Worst PS2 Sequal To a PS1 RPG
Description: There have been some bad ones.
Klaus - May 6, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
Well lets face it, just about every RPG great on the PS1 has been butchered, or at the very least did not exceed its previous titles.
So I ask, which has been wrecked the most?
A few things to note, I split the Suikodens mainly because some people like 3 butnot 4, or vice versa.
Also, FFX is a good game actually, so it is hardly fair to group it with its sequal.
Grandia 2 is not a PS2 game so don't ask.
Xenosaga 1 and 2 are both as bad as each other, but if you don't think so then tough mister... I ran out of spaces.
Hard to choose, isn't it? they are all pretty bad games after all.
If I had to choose: I choose Xenosaga, not because they are esspecially bad games, only because they ruined a series I loved greatly and made it a boring slow and pointlessly cliched RPG.
Clive - May 6, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)
Grandia 2 was just rereleased for the ps2, so I see where your coming from. it was a tough decision for me. unlimited saga or BoF: dairy queen...okay dragon quater. I voted for the BOF....it was just sad. I hope that game didn't ruin the entire series
Nash - May 6, 2005 11:46 PM (GMT)
Well I voted for Suikoden 3, I know most people may disagree but I really didn't like that installment. It just didn't live up to its prequals. Besides having runes and previous characters from the series, Suikoden 3 wasn't really "Suikoden Material" for me.
Viktor - May 6, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
I choose Suikoden 3 too. It felt like a Final Fantasy not that thats bad but it's meant to be a Suikoden.
Clive - May 7, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
true it didn't live up to the other installments but at least I played it through unlike i did BoF:DQ
Klaus - May 7, 2005 10:51 AM (GMT)
Wow, I must say I am suprised by that... I never expected Suikoden 3 to be so unpopular, though I am sort of glad it is... it really was an odd volume in the series.
BoF was indeed a let down, it was a stupid game in so many ways I can't understand how people find the strength to play it through to the end. It really is that bad! They should be proud!
I wonder though, how many of you have played Unlimited Saga? That is probably the most unbearable game of the lot, as well as a huge let down to the series.
Of course, I also found Xenosaga unbearable giving up after a few hours. I will never touch it again. Both of them.
Clive - May 7, 2005 05:50 PM (GMT)
I played Unlimited Saga... I'm willing to give it a second chance... but I do remember that I didn't really like it that much. So I'll proubly buy it really cheap when I get some money. And touch it every now and then.
Viktor - May 8, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
Suikoden 3 was good but as i said it felt as if it wasn't suikoden it felt as if its a Final fantasy thats why its a bad sequal but good game. understand?
Pesmerga - May 11, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)
I want to know why you didn't add Grandia 2.
Now I'll briefly explain what I think of each game.
Unlimited SaGa - Awful. I only played Saga Frontier 1 and thought that it had many strong points, as well as weak ones, but it was still enjoyable none the less. Unlimited Saga let me down so much that it is 1 of 2 games that I never finished. (besides Xenogears which doesn’t count)
Breath of Fire: DQ - The only other game I didn't finish. BOF4 was gold, DQ is awful. Diary Queen? I like!
Suikoden III - Well, One of the best RPG's ever. I love the trinity system.
Suikoden IV - certainly improved over suikoden 1, but 2 and 3 were much better.
Wild Arms 3 - I only played Wild Arms 2 and this sequel improved on it in many ways. The characters were great. I like to see rpg's with specific genres. I think this is the only western style RPG to date.
Xenosaga ep1 - I haven’t played episode 2 yet but I really enjoyed 1. It had its flaws but it was great. This is probably because I never finished Xenogears so I didn't have anything to compare with even though they are not direct sequels. It’s a sad story actually. It involves the CD suddenly not working. I was enjoying is as well.
Final Fantasy X, - Well, not bad at all. Best FF next to FF8.
Final Fantasy X2 - I actually loved this game. So there!
Legaia Duel Saga - again, didn't play the sequels. This game was great.
Grandia Extreme - it gets an eh! Average game. Good battle system.
Arc the Lad : TOTS - Had to add this. This game is GOLD!. But I never played the prequels. This game is highly recommended.
Final Verdict - Unlimited Saga
Clive - May 11, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
Xenogears is actually episode 5 of the Xenosaga games, I hope that by then they relize that the game play of their new series is not as great as Xenogears' was. And that they just enhance the graphics for Xenogears and maybe some storyline elemts that make it tie in better with the xenosaga games... It's really annoying to play the 5th game in a series and try to understand everything.
Arc the Lad: TOTS was interesting but I feel that it didn't live up to the prequals... they were just better in my mind...TOSH RULES!... had to get that in...
Nash - May 11, 2005 10:10 PM (GMT)
Yeah I also played Arc the Lad: TOTS, it wasn't that bad. I never played the prequals either, but I know they were great, due to reviews. FF X-2 wasn't that bad either, I have no clue why many people in neo and other forums don't like it. The storyline made sense, so was the new dress sphere system in battles. The only thing i do agree that sucks about FF X-2 was the new Blitzball system since you barely have any control of the mini-game, and thats pretty much it.
Clive - May 11, 2005 10:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah I liked the orignal blitzball system, but since the game was made more towards girls, it gave off a really girly feeling that annoying the hell out of me. But the main idea was good, but the smaller ideas that were thrown in were just annoying.
Nash - May 11, 2005 10:20 PM (GMT)
Well I do have to agree, it was leaning more to female gamers but I don't didn't mind much. All I had to do was imagine Paine as a guy, lol, just kidding. Anyway, it was also pretty short, which I guess, disappointed a few people, but this game was out kinda quick right after FF-X came out. I'd rate FF-X2 maybe 7/10.
Clive - May 11, 2005 10:36 PM (GMT)
Rikku was annoying as hell. I'd give it a 5.5/10 I also hated the % system I still only have 99% after playing that game so much and even using the guide.
Nash - May 11, 2005 10:47 PM (GMT)
Its the voice acting that also annoyed me, still there is one game with the worst voice acting possible in mind. Usually, I don't really care about the voice acting but Star Ocean's Feena(sp?) from SO3 was head splitting. It was so high pitched and....well you get the point if you played the game.
Clive - May 11, 2005 10:56 PM (GMT)
I hated Baiton Kaitos' voice acting, it had a hollow, strange effect to it. I couldn't put up with it.

| I want to know why you didn't add Grandia 2. |
This is a Dreamcast game, not a PS2 game, so it didn't technically qualify. If they had updated or changed the game when they ported it, maybe, but its almost exactly the same.
I'll also say what I think of these games...
Unlimited SaGa - I played Romancing SaGa on the SNES and they were pretty cool, and this is a proper sequal, it lets you choose charactes and stuff, but it is a truly awful game. It just didnt make me want to play it at all.
Breath of Fire: DQ -I only liked part 3 of this series, so I wasnt suprised I didn't like this game much. Add to that the fact they butchered agood thing and you got a crappy game. Yey.
Suikoden III - Hahahaha no where near one of the best ever. I can name heaps of games better. Anyway, basically they took what made the previous games suikodens and used them in stupid and boring ways. Cliched stories, characters and the worst part of all, a no cntralised story, I mean wtf, its a war game people.
Suikoden IV - Old school, but perhaps too much so. This is only a half finished game.
Wild Arms 3 -Part 1 was the best, it was oldschool and funny and fun and school old and magical stuffs of stuff that is magic. Anyway it was sort of a let down that this game was so boring, the story, the battles and the pace were all so tedious. Wasted oppertunity. Apparently a remake of Wild arms one is coming. That could be cool...
Xenosaga ep1 - They are the same story, just different episodes. Kind of like Star Wars, they wrecked this too.
Final Fantasy X, - I don't see any reason to dislike this game, though I've heard Flik say its too pretty...
Final Fantasy X2 - A craptacular crapfest of craptanic proportions. Ruined every decent aspect of 10 INCLUDING the stupid story. Also they claim this is the first FF to have jumping.... didn't anyone else play FF7 or something?
Legaia Duel Saga - The sequal is so much better then this game. It is one disc but offers a very impressive 50 hours of gameplay (and I'm a fast player too!) This game sort of spoiled the combat a bit, and is on the whole a bit easier, but the spirit system was cool for puzzles.
Grandia Extreme - I actually give it a Meh
Arc the Lad : TOTS - I didnt add this because I didnt think anyone would have played it. I was wrong.
I'd give FFx2 a 7 maybe, it was pretty and had mediocre everything, but 7 usually means "one for the fans" in magazines, and you would have to be a pretty huge fan to bother with this. I wasnt a big enough fan thats for sure (die stupid game sitting in the corner collecting dust!)
Nash - May 12, 2005 10:32 PM (GMT)
Ha ha, well I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Hmmm, Grandia 2 did come out for PS2. I pretty sure since I did play Grandia 2 on PS2. It probably was a late release on this system whereas it came out first for Dreamcast.
Klaus - May 13, 2005 10:38 AM (GMT)
Umm yes I said it was ported. They didn't change it, they just brought it over. So really it is still a DC game.
Nash - May 13, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
Oh I see. Well anyway, I didn't like Grandia 2. It just wasn't that fun to play, the story was kinda dull too.
Clive - May 14, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
Pesmerga - May 14, 2005 02:57 AM (GMT)
And those waterfalls in the background were enough to give you a headache. I'm usually not one to pick on graphics but this was just aweful. A game that would have looked much better in the Gradia enigine. And yes, I'v seen my freind play the original, just a very very very long time ago.
Clive - May 14, 2005 02:59 AM (GMT)
Wish they would of enhanced it instead of just porting it.
Klaus - May 14, 2005 09:37 AM (GMT)
Yes a proper update would have been good, its is a real pity since under all the crapness is actually a fairly decent game. It is certainly not the worst game on the PS2, not even the worst RPG.
Clive - May 15, 2005 01:38 AM (GMT)
The graphics were just horrid. The story wasn't too bad, but it did need an overhaul.
Klaus - June 9, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
Well, this topic died didnt it. Anyway.... ressurection rune! YELL!
I wanna bag games more.
I'm gonna bag Xenosaga now.
Visually it wa not very impressive, and living through 40 minutes of video isn't even that bad, but battles that take almost that long, as well as a truly, truly disgraceful combat system, means it is a terribly awful game.
Clive - June 9, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
Well the first one was a little confusing...but I could tolerate it...
And in Episode 2...welll i am not very far into it...but I kind of like it... now i don't like Shion's new outfit...or the fact that her hair changed from red-orange to brown...even when it did a flashback before episode 1 took place... andi don't like kos-mos' voice either... but then again... i never like kos-mos.... But I am glad that Ziggy did not change....mainly his voice.... or his personality...but he does talk a little faster in battles... and I know in episode 3 he wil have an upgraded body.... but as long as he doesn't look ridiculous...or they keep his voice and general personality... I'm ok with that... Plus episode 2 has JIN!!! The guy ho looks just like citran....uses a sword like citan... just too cool... and i know that people have said that he is not actually citan or really related to him... because Citan took the name Uzuki from his wife Yue... but still.... he is pretty cool...
As for the battle system... well it does seems a little too long sometimes...and i feel that every new dungeon makes the monsters severally stronger...and i usually spend hours just leveling up... and i miss the spical attacks...well they are there...but they have been changed way too much to enjoy it... the don't say the move when they do it... they don't even work like they did in 1... but I am hopeing that they will start to improve the gameplay... and the battles... and put shops back in there!!!
Aside from that.... I think this game has a crazy yet interesting deep storyline with some good plot twists...can not wait to play all the episodes at once!!!....that'll be a long couple months...
Bob (Free) - June 10, 2005 02:14 PM (GMT)
Breath of Fire:DQ
I liked its previous series mainly Breath of Fire 3 and 4 but this game really dissapointed me. I don't like its Survival theme style, The story doesn't appeal to me and the characters has no feelings and only 3 characters are usable if I remeber correctly. Lack of environments and most them are boring and its saving system I hated it. I just wasted my money to this game. For Xenosaga 1,2 I don't think its a bad game.
Wakaba - August 11, 2005 11:17 AM (GMT)
has to be Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter...I thought it will be cool because of the deep story and realistic background effects but god! kill me! The characters suckerz and the song! ARGH! Oh God! And here I only saw the trailer that greatly disappointed my a.s!
The background isn't great either! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SOUNDS?! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DRAMA? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE THRILL AND HUMOR AND ARRGHH!!!! The story was so great but the system...argggh!
It looks exciting for a moment but the characters! They're like, nothing but stones with faces! The songs! THEY'RE TRASHES!
Characters: suckerz
Music: suckerz
Flow: suckerz
Battle: nice
Story: nice
Futch - August 11, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
For me I looked over the games that I have played
Suikoden III -
I didn't really like the quality of the game that much. It was alright but it seemed a bit more... rushed than the previous Suikoden games. The music wasn't very Suikodenish but overall, I kinda liked the story line, it could have done without Chris or Sarah but nonetheless it was alright.
Suikoden IV -
Many people will disagree with me but, I loved this game. You got to see Ted again and use him, the confessionals were fun, Chinchirorin was back though with a crap name. Snow was awsome (don't kill me for that) I feel that he was the only one that had, grown in personality. The music was more to Suikoden standards and it seemed that they spent a bit more time on it. Though there were some typo's in translation I liked the game nonetheless.
Xenosaga eps1 -
I didn't like this game at all. I played up to you having to get off of the ship in the beggining. Citan's ancestor chick can't run worth anything, I didn't really much like the graphics wise and frankly, I didn't like how they had set the whole thing up. Xenogears was an awsome game but this one was crap.
Final Fantasy X -
God this game was horrible. The voice acting was crap, Yuna looked like she was on some sort of drugs and the Story wasn't all that great. I got to Seymore (??) but never bothered to finish it. I just couldn't stand it very long. The music was alright I just do not like this game as a whole and the fact that they made a sequal to it, what the hell. They could have chosen a better FF game to make a sequal to, like FFVIII, I liked this game more than X, and I don't like VIII that much.
So after reveiwing them, I chose Xenosaga.
Luc - August 6, 2006 05:55 PM (GMT)
There are quite a few games here that I didn't like at all, but really, the one that is the worst of this entire list has to be Suikoden IV. I loved Suikoden II, one of the best RPG's i've played, but seeing this was to unbearable. Quite honestly I think that people complaining about Suikoden III being to different should replay this and see. Party members cut down to a FF game size, taking away a whole dimension to the regular Suikoden system. The first thing I see before storyline, returning characters or whatnot is gameplay, and this one's sucked. Although i've heard there isn't much storyline to explore anyway. Yeah that's right, I haven't completed it. Got bored after escaping from Obel, EVERY time I played.
As much as I hate to admit it... FFX-2 while annoying, is somehow playable. I kept saying to myself "gawd this game sucks" yet i'd continue to play. Played through it... three times I think. It's got a fast paced battle system that's pretty fun to play around with, especially getting huge chains.
'Trigger Happy' - 'Trigger Happy' - 'FIRAGA!'
Nash - August 6, 2006 07:05 PM (GMT)
Suikoden 4 was a dissapointment, didn't "feel" like a Suikoden game...
though I don't think it's the worst game on the list...
Suikoden 3...no idea WHY the game is on the list, characters get more fleshed out then any previous installment, even IF the development team switched near the end of the game. Trinity system was new, and didn't hurt any aspect of the gameplay. Only thing I dislike is the pairing. Still not enough to get four :bleep: votes as the worst game thing....
Never played Unlimited Saga, FFX2, or Grandia Xtreme, though Grandia 3 was horribly boring....still haven't beat it. Doesn't have that feel of the first two games.
Final Fantasy X was a decent game, despite me giving it hell for certain scenes, like the laughing scene.. (ugh!) I've played worse on the list.
BoFDQ...hmmm I have this game, and all my friends at the DL boards absolutely adore this game. I dislike it because of the crap you have to go through to play the story. I hate not being able to heal myself and limited saving and all that jazz, just annoying...
Wild ARMs 3.....had a wonderful story. It suffered from a boring as hell battle engine though. None of the characters were unique, they all were weak and you had to wait till the end game with miracle arts to make one or two of them decent. Lame, though I enjoyed the story, so its safe.
Legaia Duel Saga was alright....nothing special.
Xenosaga....
RUINED the Xeno series, they better not mess with Gears at all. The game is perfect the way it is, and we have seen that Monolith soft can't make a game correctly. Xenosaga had a lot going for it, but failed under presentation. Stupid quazi ending and horrible story, I own part 2, but unable to get back into the story...
I choose Saga as the worse on the list.
Alen - February 22, 2007 04:51 PM (GMT)
Suikoden III through me off for a while, my brother actually stopped playing until V came out because of it. But I still enjoyed it! The pairing system I think was the worst idea in the world though... Overall a damn good storyline and fun game!
Suikoden IV Was definately a twist to the Suiko-world. Some of the chars are pretty cool, and Ted being flushed out was cool too. But only 4 chars? It made using mage characters useless. In any other suikoden you stick your overpowered mage in the back where he is safe, no where to hide in IV though.
FF X Was a mediocre game, not bad... WAAAAY too easy though..
FFX 2 Never played...
Unlimited Saga was HORRID! I could never play that game for more than 5 minutes. Which pissed me off because Saga Frontier was an awesome game!
BOF DQ never played... but I watch my brother play it... looked pretty bad, nothin like good 1, 2, and 3.
Xenosaga OMFG THE BEST GAME I EVER WATCHED. Too many cutscenes made playing this game into a grueling act of self destruction. Seriously I loved Xenogears one of my favorite RPGs of all time, but Xenosagas ruined it for me.. I too voted for this one.
Zweig - March 12, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... this is a close call for me, so I won't vote just yet.
I haven't played a few of these, but I thought both Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter and Final Fantasy X2 were total disgraces on their series. Two of the worst RPGs I've seen.
Tai Ho - March 13, 2007 01:38 AM (GMT)
After enjoying Final Fantasy X as much as I did (it was the first PS2 game I played alongside Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty), I was definately disappointed by Final Fantasy X-2.
Zweig - March 16, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I have sort of mixed feelings about Final Fantasy X, but I hated Final Fantasy X-2. In fact, Final Fantasy X-2 is one of the few FF games I felt was so bad I wasn't going to buy it.
Pohl - March 16, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
Xenogears to Xenosaga, I know its not just a sequel but comparing Xenogears every Xenosaga even together sucks beside it.
Zweig - March 16, 2007 05:42 PM (GMT)
Xenogears never came to Australia, so I can't really compare.
Alen - March 16, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
Take our word for it, Xenogears was an awesome game. Xenosaga was more of a movie than a game with too many cut scenes, it looked cool though. Either way it was a huge disappointment
Zweig - March 16, 2007 06:53 PM (GMT)
Well, I've seen a few bits and pieces of Xenogears from YouTube, and read a bit about it. The anime movie scenes look great, and I really like a certain AMV for it I found that uses the ending song. I guess it is hard to judge the game since I haven't had a hands-on go of it, but I like the animation. The graphics look a lot like Breath Of Fire 4, which has a great look in my opinion. Xenogears also resembled the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion in a few ways, from what I can tell.
