you don't have to lock a thread just because you think it's the end of the discussion. i would have posted a reply to this:
QUOTE
Ok, the competition had an extra day and anyone who submitted their videos to me before this post is counted for the competition.

this seems like a fairly regular occurrence, and my guess is because you specify only a date (no time) on a website which is worldwide. this means there's up to 50 hours of variance as to when the actual end of the competition is (so says wikipedia: any given calendar date exists at some point on the globe for 50 hours.)

QUOTE
Be tuned for the final results on 6th November 2009!

the eleventh it is.

The reason we close competitions after the due date (generally) is so that people don't think that there is the ability to submit more levels.

Personally, I close it weeks after the results are in.

Pieguy I get it yes the times are wrong and the videos are not up yet but could you please stop talking about this I'm very busy how many more times do I have to say this, and I like to close a topic with a post because it gives people reason to close it. By the way, you won it there I told you before the 11th November 2009! Now the reason why this topic is closed because there's nothing else to discuss on it. wink.gif

Tom, I'm opening this topic again because, to be quite frank, some of us don't check the board every day and may actually have something to discuss on a thread that has been closed. As I've mentioned in the mod forum, I don't believe topics should be closed just because one person believes everything that can be said has been said. I'll repeat what I said there so everyone can see it:

QUOTE
Is it really necessary to lock topics like this? On most forums I've been a part of, topics are locked if the discussion is already taking place in another thread or if a discussion is getting out of hand. Do we really need to lock topics just because we believe nothing more needs to be said, when in reality, someone else might want to say something? The subforum display option is set by default to show topics with posts from the last 30 days, so if nothing more is said, the topic will get buried, then eventually disappear. Anyone who wants to say something could find the topic again by expanding the display option to more days/weeks, but this would be rare. Locking the topic doesn't make it disappear, so I guess I just don't see the need for it.

I know that closed topics are annoying, and there are other things too that are much different than the other forums I help run. I have changed the most severe ones: fast reply, signature length, length until topics become hidden, etc.

I close topics on this site when the discussion has reached an end. (Usually when the competition has ended, and there is nothing more to discuss.) I am also willing to open most topics for anyone if they contact me. I am usually online every day. Just send a PM.

I don't think topics need to be closed if their discussions are thought to be over.

As John said,

If somebody wants to add something to a thread, they should be able to. I don't see how locking a thread accomplishes anything, as all threads die natural deaths if nobody posts on them.

Seriously, what would be talked about in the September Create Competition thread? I just don't see the point of keeping those locked up.

Likewise, what is the point in keeping questions that have been answered?

Person 1: Asks a question.
Person 2: Answers.
Person 1: Thanks.
Admin: Closes.

If someone wants to post something, post a new topic and the admin can merge the topics.

If someone does want to post something related in a new topic, and the admin merges the topics, this would require two actions on the part of the admin - closing and merging. On the other hand, just letting things run their course, providing that there are no problems or issues with the discussions taking place, would require no work for the admins and less confusion for those who are posting. smile.gif

Also, the idea of closing a thread simply because a question has been answered is a bit problematic for those who may just want to comment or share an opinion. Let's say, for example, that a Create Competition has ended, and everyone's inquiries have been dealt with. What if someone - possibly someone new to the forum - wanted to comment on the levels that were submitted - a subject that would be appropriate for that thread only? Why should they start a new thread that would then be merged with an old one when they can just post on the old one?

i wasn't trying to complain about the slowness, just the fact that the competition deadline is not the end of the competition. i say if a solution comes in after the deadline, it gets ignored. but you can't really do this if the deadline isn't well defined. so i guess i was indirectly asking for a more precise competition deadline.

Hmm, I think I've been a little too harsh on moderation lately and to try and get pieguy back I'm going to reopen this topic. I've not really been myself lately and want to make apologies to anyone who thinks I've been ignoring them or trying to look past the problem.

I will try to make deadlines as soon as I can, I will get all videos uploaded by this month, and if required I will ask a staff member to be notified to continue for me if necessary. I am sorry for all these problems and its bad management I know, but things will change I promise.

TOPIC REOPENED
