Spring can not come quickly enough in the capital of Corus, where commoners struggle to make ends meet. In the city's criminal underground there is stirring of war within the Rogue, threatening to destroy the stability of the city.

Tortall stands on the precipice of change; on the eve of the royal barge party in mid July, the arsonist that has plagued the city plans his ultimate revenge against the city he had found to be corrupt. The city of Corus will burn, destroying everything in its path regardless of age, profession or social standing and will plunge the city into chaos.

As the city lies in ruins, the drums of war beat ever louder. The call has gone out, summoning all of Baird's warriors to their arms. Marching against their eastern neighbor in a pre-emptive strike, will Tortall be victorious or has the young, impulsive king bitten off more than he can chew?

THE GLORY OF THE VICTORS

King Baird V has been on the throne a year, interested in wine, women and song more than running a kingdom. Tusaine, hoping to take advantage of Tortall's mismanagement stood in the early spring to take the Drell River Valley. After months of hard fighting in the mud, Tortall came out victorious with a daring midnight mission, being called The Great Gamble.

Victorious, Baird is holding magnificent parties in the palace to celebrate. The men that have returned are also being welcomed with warm arms and most expect many rushed weddings in the coming months.

As the winter months approach, the court hopes it can continue to celebrate, but with only an average harvest, troubles in the half burned city of Corus and Baird's growing indifference to his young wife, who knows how long the party will last?
