Renting a property after bankruptcy could be a problem.

Firstly, you will fail the reference agency searches.
Several landlords were not interested in renting their properties to us.
The landlord who finally accepted us requested a full year of rent before agreeing
This was approx £12,000 plus another £1,800 deposit.

We managed to negotiate a reduction of £300 a month as we were paying a lump sum. He agreed to this. But we did have to ask family for assistance in raising a large part of this money, which I found quite humiliating. But we had no alternative - we would have been out on the streets otherwise.

A year later we were again asked to pay for reference checks, even though we knew we would fail the investigative searches. We had ask to pay the next year monthly. Fortunately for us, we live next door to our landlord and get on quite well with him. He has agreed the new monthly arrangement and still at the original reduced price.

Although be prepared. When first applying to pay monthly (for our second year in rent) we were asked find a guarantor whose salary was 30 times our monthly rent. Yet, another humilating request. So three years down the road we are still paying for our sins.

Curiously I never saw the questions on the reference agency questionnaire: 'Have you EVER committed murder, rape or fraud? Funny that.
