thor_greetings.gif Welcome to Gate Tech 101.

This is a introductory course covering the basics of the Stargate and the Stargate Program. I run a pretty informal classroom. There are no tests, but I will give the occational pop quiz to see if you're paying attention. Please note that some of the questions in the pop quizes will be from outside the info I give in the lessons to see what else you know already.

Lesson 1 – Early History of the Stargate Program

The Stargate is circular device that stands 22 ft in diameter, weighing approximately 64,000 lbs, and constructed of Naqahdah, a heavy mineral that is not native to planet Earth. There are nine chevrons spaced equally around the circumference of the gate, along with an inner ring that displays 39 glyphs, or symbols.

The first Stargate discovered on Earth was found in 1928 at an archeological dig of the Giza plateau. The device was buried under a cover stone inscribed with a series of unknown markings. Dr. Langford, the archeologist who uncovered the gate, spent many years after trying to discover the purpose of the device. In 1945, though a process of manually dialing random combinations of the device’s glyphs, Langford’s team was able to turn on the gate. Langford’s assistant, Dr. Ernest Littlefield volunteered to be the first person to step through. When the device shut off leaving no sign of Dr. Littlefield, he was presumed dead. The program was summarily shut down and all but forgotten about for over two decades.

In the late 1960’s, Catherine Langford, daughter of Dr. Langford and fiancé of Ernest Littlefield, began petitioning the US government to resume experiments on the gate. She was eventually given approval to continue her father’s work. Much of the notes from the original gate experiments, including the fact that it had been turned on in 1945 and what really happened to Ernest Littlefield, were lost in the Pentagon’s archives. It was not until 1994 and the addition of Dr. Daniel Jackson to the program before the cover stone found with the gate was correctly translated and the gate was turned on again, connecting to a corresponding gate on a planet known as Abydos.

Pop Quiz

Name at least 4 of the members of the original team sent through the gate to Abydos.
