Year 72 - Red River Weyr was founded in the foothills above the temperate tablelands in the central northern continent. The first Weyrwoman was Fiora of gold Ravath. The first Weyrleader was M'lel of bronze Duseth. Their first clutch consisted of 31 eggs with one queen, Jugrenth.

Beginning during the Second Pass, a trend developed amongst the Pernese. Though green dragons would Impress to male and female Candidates, fewer and fewer women were being Searched to Stand on the sands for the new babies. This was due to several factors -- holders were unwilling to send their daughters to the Weyr, preferring to keep them home to marry off to establish alliances or for personal gain. This move was also influenced by the commonfolks' interpretation of the Weyrs as an unwelcome draw upon healthy young men and women, (even a bastion of immorality).

Red River Weyr alone seemed to be immune to this trend. Their dragons still Searched out boys and girls alike, and female greenriders were given equal rights as their male counterparts, permitted to fly Threadfall with the wings. This perturbed many Holders, and even some of the other Weyrs. After all, a queenrider was a woman of upstanding virtues, inner strength, ensurers of Pern's future. Greenriders were promiscuous, emotional... the stigma attached to female greenriders grew and grew, and while Red River Weyr enjoyed pleasant (if cool) relationships with the other Weyrs, its relationship with the Holds suffered.

Currently, Red River Weyr is seen as the 'bastard child' of the Weyrs -- the last founded, a place to send riders that do not necessarily fit into the strictly stratified society that Pern has developed. It is a forward-thinking place, interesting in that it is actually perhaps the last Weyr to hold to the Old Ways.

Year 508 - Current Turn (late 3rd Interval)
Grananth's last clutch produced a Gold, as well as three odd-colored dragons: the two Rose-Golds, Hectith and Trelilith, and a Pewter, Tecsolth. Thread is due to begin falling within the turn, the Weyr is without a Weyrleader, and Gold Kessuth and her Rose-Gold sisters will soon Rise to mate, bringing with them a new Weyrleader and three Hatchings at which your candidates might Impress.

Rose-Gold Hectith's first clutch has hatched, producing not only another Rose-Gold and another Pewter, But a tiny miniature Gold. In a startling turn of events Golden Kessuth rose during the hatching and chose an outsider bronze as her mate. With Golden Aurath and Rose-Gold Divinith having been kidnapped by Unknown assailants along with two of the unimpressed candidates, how will the new and inexperienced Weyrleaders handle their new troubles?

It is a forward-thinking place, interesting in that it is actually perhaps the last Weyr to hold to the Old Ways.

Year 511 - Current Pass (2 Turns into the 3rd Pass)
Grananth's last clutch produced Gold Kessuth, as well as three odd-colored dragons: the two Rose-Golds, Hectith and Trelilith, and a Pewter, Tecsolth. Red River has fought its first Threadfall, which came the night that Kessuth's clutch hatched. Though there were several losses, the Weyr gained personnel in the form of Sari of Gold Aurath and a band of riders who had been kidnapped as Candidates for a hidden clutch 50 turns ago. These riders, dubbed the Foundlings, Timed it back to Red River just in time to fight Thread. Their kidnapper recently returned to claim what he thought was his, but his brown jumped between, leaving him an empty shell. One of the Foundlings, Aineva of Rosegold Divinith, betrayed her fellow riders, taking T'mii's body and disappearing. The Weyr has been left shaken, but not broken.

Sari's Aurath has risen to provide Red River Weyr with another clutch, with Raliel's Kessuth rising only five days after. S'ton of bronze Bannith became the new Weyrleader of Red River Weyr. The resulting clutch number 20 eggs, but of those twenty, only sixteen Hatched, with one bronze going between and a sickly blue dying within a week of the Hatching. Three months have passed since that Hatching and now Red River has more troubles on its hands. An illness has started to wreak havoc on the residents of the Weyr and only a few seem to have escaped its devastating effects. No one is sure where this illness is coming from or even how it is spread, let alone how it could be cured. One can only hope that the other Weyrs will come to their aid and fight Threadfall over Red River's territory while the healers race to get the fighting wings back in the air.

Red River Weyr has many open spots for brown, blue, and greenriders, as long as any crafter you can possibly dream of. And Candidates. We always need Candidates. Especially with a dragon Hatching expected in September and a wild Wher Hatching on August 1st. We have 30+ active members, all of which have many ideas for posts and are friendly to boot. Rumors, romance, hardship and happiness...you'll find it all at Red River Weyr.

Well, the Plague has taken yet another Gold Weyrling pair from us, and though Red River is the Bastard Weyr, the other Weyrs have taken pity and decided to send us a new Queenpair. They will have graduated Weyrling training, but they have not yet Risen in their maiden Flight (so she will be due to Rise very soon after her arrival!)

Here's where you will come in: We're holding a contest to see who will get to play Red River's newest Queenpair. Your task will be to write up a profile sheet for the rider and her Gold. In addition to the standard details, you will need to include the Weyr she is transferring from, the names of the dragons which produced the Queen (You can find the possible parents in the Who's Who thread in Information), the reason she was chosen to go (is she a responsible, level-headed girl who they thought would be a help to Red River in our time of need? Is she a troublesome woman the Weyrleaders are tired of dealing with and have decided to send her to us to get her out of their hair?) You will also need to write up a first post for judging, in which the pair arrive at the Weyr, which should be four to five paragraphs long at least.

These characters will be judged based on attention to detail and quality of writing (including spelling and grammar). If you already have one clutching female (Gold or Rosegold) or if you have two rankers/specials (Bronze, Rosegold, Pewter), you will not be considered eligible for this competition.

Now for your deadline. Starting today, you will have three weeks to write up the profiles of both the rider and her Queen. On the tenth of September, we will close the contest and take one week to look over the sheets and make our decisions, which will be announced on the 17th. After that, the winning profile can be posted in characters and moved to the appropriate forum, and play can begin. It will probably be a little over one IRL month before the Queen can Rise, due to the current hatching rotation schedule.

Submission procedure is the same as usual: you will submit a COMPLETED profile sheet for both rider and dragon (NO WIP'S WILL BE ACCEPTED) in a PM to all four staff members (Myself, Red, Chey, and Lith) BEFORE the deadline is up. We want to see your VERY BEST WORK, so make sure you write full paragraphs with complete, dynamic sentences. We want these girls to come to life in our heads, so please, PLEASE make this extremely difficult for us! It's why we're taking a week to decide on a winner!

Rare is the day that you will get a chance to play a fully mature gold within a RL month of her maiden flight on an established site like Red River. We have been around for 1 year, 4 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days (but hey, who's counting!) and plan on sticking around the Pern Fandom for a very long time! Our problem is that there seems to be a curse bestowed upon our queenriders and even our characters are getting a little superstitious. So would you like to rise to the challenge? We can't wait to be wowed!

A turn and a half has passed since the plague that took far too many of Red River Weyr's dragonriders and weyrfolk. But what has happened to the riders who attacked the Weyr with this biological weapon of sorts? No one knows, as no one has seen or heard from them since. But Weyrleader S'ton has a theory...Red River Weyr has Timed an attack on the rogue Weyr, defeating them and bringing them to justice. He says, "Well, we have already done it," pointing to the quiet months since the plague. But even with his confidence, the Weyr seems torn between those of the riders who want to fight and those who do not. Will you follow S'ton into battle with the Other Weyr? Or will you fight to keep the riders on the ground where they are safe?

Come to Red River Weyr to choose.

Come one, come all, to Red River Weyr!

We have a lot that's about to be going on! First of all, one of our unique rose-golds is Rising and has yet to be caught. So that means that a whole slew of colors is still possible. So....as everyone knows, Flights lead to babies...dragon babies! HATCHING TIME! Yes, we'll be having a Hatching on January 1st, 2011. And due to our dear Aussie friend and co-Admin, we like to start our hatchings a little early...about 12-13 hours early depending on the timezone you're in. So it's like you'll get to make your New Year's Resolution of playing amazing weyrlings a little bit early! Now doesn't that sound fun?

No?

Well, grumpypants, then we might have the plot for you. By the end of the winter season, the Weyr will have gone to war. Weyrleader S'ton is leading those who are able and willing back in time to the Other Weyr to bring Teromii, Aineva, and their followers to justice once and for all. They will leave in the morning and then time it back that afternoon with strict instructions to the Weyrwoman that if they do not return that evening to take the other queenriders and the weyrlings to the most liberal Weyr, Ista Weyr, whose relationship with Red River is still less than ideal. But despite S'ton's confidence that there have been no more attacks because they have already successfully defeated the Other Weyr, the Weyrwoman is beside herself with worry. But then again...wouldn't you if you were bearing his child?

And if THAT doesn't have your interest piqued, we have future events that might just garner some interest.

Some time in January our newly-transferred gold will be taking to the skies in her maiden flight. With many bronzes and browns fully capable of catching her, only time will tell which dragon will catch the orange-gold queen and produce a clutch that may have to supplement war-depleted numbers.

And finally, if you have a hankering for whers, you might just feel at home at Red River Weyr. We have two adult golds just barely hanging on to their last threads of patience. Who will Run first and which of Red River's males will catch her? Furthermore, how many of the eggs produced will even make it to Hatching Day?

Now, really, if that doesn't pull you in, you're hopeless. But in case you're curious....

The War is coming to a close and the riders are returning home, many with injuries that will take months to heal. No one escaped without some kind of trauma, the most prominent of which was the loss of the Weyrleader's bronze's leg. With only three legs, Bannith cannot possibly lead a Wing in Threadfall, let alone fly as a fighting dragon at all. So how will L'as, appointed to Wingsecond only a few short months ago, manage to step in and lead the Wing? Will he take over the position of Wingleader permanently, or will he give way to someone with a little more experience?

Hatching Day is around the corner and everyone waits on bated breath to see if the two pewter eggs will Hatch and who will Impress the unique colors of Red River Weyr. And what about the rest of the eggs? Who will they bond with, or will they not even break shell?

There's only one way to find out...

Cara here! It's been awhile since I've been able to give announcements before Jazzeh got to them, so let's be quick before she sees I've snuck in here :ph43r:

Kessuth's most recent mating flight has once more resulted in a change in leadership, and once more it's creating gossip about Raliel's fitness as a leader. She chose Terranth, which wouldn't be so bad if he were a Bronze instead of a Brown. Is this a sign of Raliel's slowly-slipping sanity? Does it prove Red River's weakness? Is it the ill portent that points to imminent doom? Time will tell if Brownrider Camryn is up to the task of Weyrleader, but there is this to consider: out of twelve healthy eggs, his Brown gave the Weyr two more Bronzes and a Rosegold.

Rosegold Hectith has once more returned to the skies, and this time she was caught by Brown Wyeth. The Flight went high and far, and the Weyr is certain it will bring us a good clutch. But what's this? Green Charnath has Risen a little early? Uh oh, what does this mean for the upcoming hatching? Find out on July 1st.

Plenty of rumors are swimming around the Weyr, and not just about Red River itself: news is seeping in from the Holds and Halls, and even the other Weyrs. Could there be problems at the next conclave? Is another Weyr dealing with a scandal of its own? Well, what we know for certain is that we have a few positions opening up in the Weyr soon, so come check it out!

In the Year 72, in the foothills of the temperate steppes of the northern continent, a small little weyr was founded. Fiora of Gold Ravath and her Weyrleader, M’lel of bronze Duseth, blessed the newly opened weyr with a clutch of 31 eggs and a new queen, Jugrenth, bringing good tidings and happy beginnings to the little weyr hidden in the side of a cliff.

Then change began.

Plague swept through the continent, killing many and sparing few. And while green dragons continued to pick from those offered to them, the trend began that would turn the tide against Red River and ultimately outcast them. Men did not want their daughters, sisters or betrotheds going off to fight a menace that seemed insatiable and left many riders and their mounts dead. While the rank of a Queenrider was still coveted by any holder, a female on a green became to be seen as a promiscuous, unstable woman, a pariah among pariahs.

Red River fought this trend, and welcomed those women greens who were shunned elsewhere. Relationships with other weyrs and with their own tithing holds grew cool, then resentful, and eventually all but one Major hold was lost to Red River, and the small weyr was forced to make due if it wanted to keep its views.

As a result, Red River withdrew from many attempts to strengthen relations and began to accept castaway riders, candidates, crafters and holders, working to sustain itself and uphold their promise to the people to protect them from Thread.

A few hundred years passed, and Red River remained reclusive. The old queen produced her last clutch, producing with it the much needed gold that would be set to replace her, Gold Kessuth who Impressed to Raliel. With this clutch, three odd-colored dragons were also born, further marking Red River as the black sheep among Weyrs. On this night, however, a small band of riders in the form of Sari of Gold Aurath and a few others arrived to help the weyr, revealing to those in charge that they had been kidnapped just hours before, only to return on fully grown dragons and a few years older due to the phenomenon of Timing. They also brought news of a deranged brownrider named T’mii, who a very short time later appeared to claim what he believed to be his. However, when his brown Betweened one of the new RoseGold riders, believing to be in love and with delusions of a weyr of her own at her command in her mind, defected and took T’mii and fled Between to the Other Weyr in the past.

With the loss of riders due to this fight, a plague that followed brought even more devastating losses. The death of the newest gold weyrling nearly broke the spirit of the Weyr, and the losses took many in the path of the plague before a cure was found. With the rising of two RoseGold’s in quick succession, bringing much needed dragons, and the arrival of a firey-tempered Fay of Gold Pilarth from Fort as answer to the pleas for help, Red River began to see the hopes of survival.

In response to this plague, S’ton of Bronze Bannith, the weyrleader at this time, called together his forces and Timed them all to the past, planning to end the disastrous events caused by Other Weyr and their now dragonless and half-crazed leader. There were, again, many losses on both sides, and the weyrleader and his dragon were irreparably injured, but with a queen egg soon gracing the sands, hope sprung anew.

But it is not for Red River to experience happiness for too long. The Weyrwoman, Raliel, had begun to find her mind failing, and with the pressure of internal forces and external, Raliel cracked and Kessuth, finding no hold or trace of her former rider in the woman, Betweened. The young queen Amitath of Faveonn rose, introducing her to Weyrwomanship, only to be lost as well in a wild attempt to save her sister, but not before the gold’s clutch had procuded another gold, Amaranth. With political tensions growing ever taught between Weyr and its tithing hold, Red River found itself in the leadership of another young queenrider, barely out of Weyrlinghood.

But now rumors spread. The most recent loss, that of RoseGold Nalisth and the results of her undersized and seemingly underdeveloped clutch has gossip spreading like wildfire. What caused the young RoseGold to Between so suddenly? Why are those of her clutch diminuative and weak?

And what, by the first shell, is causing so many dragons to fall ill?
