=[01INT] Introduction: =
=========================================================================

It has been over a year now since the release of Animal Crossing: Wild World
(AC:WW), and the game appears to have maintained a great deal of popularity,
due to its neverending nature and the possibilities of online play. However,
with online play comes risks, and people might not expect that with a game like
this. You might be thinking something along the lines of "What's the worst that
could happen? Somebody chops down my trees or steals an item from me?"

That couldn't be farther from the actual situation. Online play in AC:WW can
be very dangerous - there are many severe forms of sabotage and terrorism which
one would not expect in a game like this. It's depressing, really, that people
will resort to doing such a thing for cheap laughs, but there isn't much that
we can do about it - except learn how to protect our games as much as possible,
and be cautious when dealing with people we do not know. I'm writing this guide
to help make everybody aware of the danger who is not already, to correct
several misconceptions regarding some of the mechanics involved, and,
hopefully, decrease the amount of games that are ruined by giving helpful
advice to those involved.

The problem stems from the use of the cheating device Action Replay (AR), which
I do not possess, so I will be unable to give specific information on its
workings or exactly how to create the items which cause the problems. To be
honest, I don't want to know - and I certainly would prefer that information to
remain out of this guide in any case. The last thing I want to happen is for a
guide intended to protect people to have the opposite effect.

A summary of what is to come: there are items in AC:WW which can be produced by
cheating devices and which can have many adverse effects on the game, many of
which are irreversible. Some of these effects can go so far as to be harmful
not only to your gamesave, but also to your cartridge - causing it to "brick,"
never loading again and becoming functionally useless. With some care, however,
the danger of these items can be reduced as much as possible.

Remember that there is no danger in possessing any "hacked" items that can be
normally acquired through gameplay. I will not use this guide as a soapbox for
spouting my personal views on cheating/"hacking" in AC:WW, nevertheless,
avoidance is the safest policy for anything of which you are unsure.

=[02SEE] Seeds! =
=========================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[02.1CHA] Characteristics of seeds: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Seeds" are a dangerous form of "hacked" item in AC:WW. I place "hacked" in
quotes because they can be acquired through the use of the Action Replay cheat
device, and do not require altering the game code in any way (I will drop the
quotation marks for the rest of this guide). Essentially, a seed represents the
item code for a terrain feature, building, or similar object being mapped to
an item in your inventory where it does not belong. When dropped, the seed then
transforms into the object for which the code calls - many of which cannot be
removed.

Seeds share these characteristics: most appear as a leaf in the inventory,
though names vary. Most seeds' name fields are blank - it just shows a small
text blip with nothing in it. Some may be called "not used" or, for flower
seeds, the name of the flower. When dropped, there are two types of seeds: some
create the object instantly, and others appear invisible until you enter and
then exit a building. All seeds, however, will produce the same sound when
dropped - the sound of any item being dropped.

It is impossible to trade seeds normally, so people exchanging them use the
recycling bin. Since a seed dropped on the ground instantly transforms, this is
the only way to exchange them between characters.

A note on "bricking": seeds can have the side effect of causing the game
cartridge to become inoperable. AC:WW can only keep track of so many sprites
at a time, and exceeding a certain amount may cause the game to lag
significantly (though this effect can be created simply by planting too many
trees in the normal course of the game...). If there are enough objects
present, the game may simply cease to load. This could cause it to permanently
freeze at: the title screen, since it must display an image of the town, or the
character select screen after that when it is trying to load the town. If the
second occurs, the town can be restarted, and it is recommended to do so. If
the first occurs, there is not much that can be done in the way of recovery,
though it may be possible to load a gamesave onto the cartridge using the
Action Replay MAX DUO and the map editor in order to overwrite the offending
data. This bricking effect can also occur from a collision of two buildings
planted with seeds.

Some notes on general seed behavior:

Buildings placed with seeds will not appear until the client reloads the town.
This means that you will not see the building appear until you have entered and
exited a building; this also means that two players playing in the same town
may not observe the same scenery. Imagine this scenario: two players, A and B,
are playing in the same town. A drops a building seed, then enters and exits
another building to make it appear, while B stands near where the seed was
dropped. A returns and enters the building; B sees A disappear into air because
B's game still has not loaded the seeded building.

When dropping a seed to generate a building, any items, patterns, or flowers in
the area in which the building will appear will be affected. Items will be sent
to the lost and found, while patterns and flowers will disappear. Buried items
will remain buried, but inaccessible underneath the building (see the garbage
glitch in the Glitches section), which can be problematical.

With a few exceptions, seeds are treated by the game exactly the same as the
naturally occurring objects they represent. For instance, trees placed with
seeds will still contribute to perfect town status, even when they are in
locations which ordinarily would not allow trees to grow (such as in "dead" or
"infertile" spots, or on concrete). Building seeds will not create new
building interiors, but merely entrances to the same interior (the exception to
this is Nook seeds of different levels, which create their own interiors), and
the player will exit from the original building or "main" building.

There is, however, a glitch which can occur as a result of that. Placing
multiple buildings with seeds can cause the game to have difficulty
"remembering" or determining which building is the original/"main" building of
a certain type, and this can have serious consequences. Buildings which have
been affected by this will lose their door animation (when trying to enter, the
door will not open; rather, the character will walk through it while it is
closed). Ordinarily the problem is only cosmetic, but it can have serious
consequences with certain buildings - the only confirmed one is the town hall.
When creating a new character, the game needs to run a cutscene with the taxi
in front of the town hall; however, if the game forgets where the "main" town
hall is, or if the town hall has been moved/removed, it will not know what to
do at this point and the game will freeze, making it so that new characters
cannot be created.

Seeds for Gracie's car and Gulliver's UFO can have interesting effects as well.
When one of these visitors would visit the town and some of these are present,
the visitor will not necessarily appear at the expected location. Gracie will
appear at the car with the numerically lowest map coordinate (I am not sure how
the coordinates are numbered, however), and it is likely that Gulliver does as
well. It is also worth noting that on Gulliver days, if there is a UFO seed
present in the town, it will not be necessary to shoot him down in order to see
him - he will appear at the UFO, and it is unlikely that his UFO will fly by.
Additionally, seeded UFOs normally disappear and be replaced by sign boards at
6 AM when the town resets itself for the next day, but if the special visitor
for the day is Gulliver, the UFOs will not disappear.

If a seeded building is placed in the precise location at which Redd's tent (or
another temporary building such as Katrina's tent or Gracie's car) appears,
then upon that visitor's arrival, the seeded building will be replaced by the
natural one and will disappear. This collision will have no negative effects,
i.e., it will not cause the game to brick.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[02.2TYP] Common types of seeds: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Glitched flowers" or flower seeds - these appear as a leaf in your inventory
and, when dropped, become a flower. The name of the item is the same as that of
the flower. They can be dropped anywhere in the town, including on concrete.
When picked up using B, they will revert to a standard flower. Immediately
visible after dropping.

Weed seeds - they create weeds. Easily removable, and not very often used.
Immediately visible after dropping.

Hole seeds - they create holes, like would be dug with a shovel. These are
easily removable and seldom used, though they can be placed anywhere, allowing
such things as planting trees/flowers and burying items on concrete.
Immediately visible after dropping.

Tree seeds - they create trees. Many varieties exist, including forms of trees
that are not usually available in the game. Bee trees and furniture trees drop
bees or furniture the first time they are shaken; Acorn trees are not the
standard trees used during the Acorn Festival but rather trees with acorns in
the branches (though it is rumored that the acorns only fall out if it is
shaken in October). Though they can be placed on concrete and other places
where they should not be, tree seeds are easily removable with an axe and a
shovel.Immediately visible after dropping.

Festive tree seeds - these are the cedars with lights on them that appear
during Bright Nights and at New Year's (though sometimes the lights appear all
the time, and other times only while playing online - they are buggy). In the
north half of the town, they will remain lit all the time, but in the southern
half they will only light up if you have a visitor. They may not light up until
after saving and quitting, and also, they can cause the game to be unable to
load on certain days, usually those when the normal cedar trees would be
lighting up, i.e., Bright Nights and New Year's Eve.

Stump seeds - these are similar to tree seeds, they drop tree stumps. Easy to
remove. Immediately visible after dropping.

Rock seeds - these are more dangerous than the aforementioned types, they
create rocks in the town. There are multiple types available for the different
appearances of rocks, and for money rocks. These cannot be removed except by
the use of Action Replay or the map editor. Immediately visible after dropping.

Rafflesia seeds - these create Rafflesia. They cannot be removed until they
disappear naturally, and can be used to block things off the same way that
rock seeds would. The "rafflesia mask" is a form of the rafflesia seed that can
be worn as an accessory, though it appears as a red rose when worn: its icon in
inventory is goggles and its name is "not used." Another form appears as a hat
icon in the inventory and appears invisible when worn. Other forms of the
rafflesia seed are also available.

Building seeds - the really dangerous ones, and what people are usually talking
about when they refer to seeds. These become buildings. All building seeds,
however, do not actually create a new building, merely a new entrance to the
common space, i.e., if you use a house seed, it will take you to the same house
interior as the original house (the exception to this is Nook seeds - they
create an entirely new shop inventory, but will never upgrade). The character
will always exit from the original building as opposed to the seeded one.
Common forms include: House seeds (for every level of upgrade - mansion seeds
are most common), Nook seeds (for every level of upgrade), Able Sisters seeds,
Town hall seeds, Gate seeds, Redd's tent seeds, Katrina's tent seeds,
Gulliver's UFO seeds, Gracie's Car seeds, Neighbor house seeds*, Sign board
seeds, Message board seeds. These cannot be removed except by the use of Action
Replay or the map editor. Invisible until entering and exiting a building.

New Year's Countdown Sign seed - this one is very dangerous. It creates the
countdown sign which appears on New Year's Eve - however, it will not appear
until that date, when it often causes the game to brick! In every other respect
it is similar to a building seed.

Game Bricker or Brick seed - the most dangerous seed of all. This seed
apparently just causes the cartridge to brick, never being able to load again.
It may not even require the game to be saved in order to do so. Not much is
known about this one, and it is unclear whether it actually exists.
NOTE: THE GAME BRICKER SEED HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TO BE A MYTH. THE 9TH NEIGHBOR
SEED IS WHAT PEOPLE USUALLY REFER TO AS THE "BRICK SEED", AND CAN BE CORRECTED
(SEE THE NEXT SECTION FOR INFORMATION ON THAT). IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN A
BRICKING EFFECT FROM A COMBINATION OF SEEDS, BUT THERE IS NO ONE "UBER-SEED"
THAT DOES THIS ON ITS OWN.

*9th Neighbor House seed - this is often referred to as the game brick seed, as
it has a similar effect, especially since this one is known to exist. Bricking
caused by a Neighbor House seed can often be repaired. To do so involves time
travelling: set the game to the date one week before the seed was dropped, and
try loading the game. If it does not load, set the clock forward a week and try
again. Keep setting the clock forward a week until the game possibly loads,
after which you can preserve your cartridge by selecting to restart your town.
Seeds for Neighbor Houses 1-8 are safer and will only create a new entrance to
the specified neighbor's house interior.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[02.3DET] How to detect seeds: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may seem fairly obvious, but there are some things to be aware of. The
most common form of seeds, and the most often used in vandalism, are building
seeds and rock seeds - and of those, building seeds do not immediately appear,
so can go unnoticed until it is too late. However, all seeds make a sound when
dropped, even though they are invisible, and can be detected in this way if
your character is near to the person dropping the seed. If you enter and exit a
building, it will cause the building to appear. Other forms of seeds, such as
tree or rock seeds, will appear immediately and so are easier to detect.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[02.4REC] Recovery techniques - what to do if you are seeded: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several things that can be done if you are the victim of a seeding
attack. The most obvious is, of course, to restart your town assuming the game
still loads, but this should be a last resort measure. There are other things
which should be attempted prior to a full restart.

If you possess the Action Replay MAX DUO (AR DUO) for GBA and DS, you can use
the map editor to remove the offending buildings. Some AR users are capable of
removing seeds over Wi-fi, though I do not know how they do it - if you can
find such a person, by all means see if they will help you. However, this has
its own consequences: after a seed is removed, it is impossible to drop items
in any of the spaces where the seed once was (clarification from JPM31, a seed
remover: "It is not impossible to drop items, when a building appears it has
its surrounding area, which a good hacker would remove with/after they remove
the seed. Even I admit I hadn't been removing it without being asked to, but it
is removable").

The most common places for seeds to be placed are in front of either the
gatehouse or the house, in order to block entry. Both of these are severe for
the victim - if the gate is blocked, online play is no longer possible, while
if the house is blocked, the player will no longer be able to play at all: when
starting up the game, the character will be knocked unconscious by the house
overlapping his/her position, and will respawn in front of the house... to be
knocked out again, generating an infinite loop!

If the gate is seeded, a gate seed can be used for a temporary fix. If the gate
is blocked, but your character remains inside the gatehouse - you still have
access to Copper and can travel elsewhere to attempt to buy a gate seed.
Otherwise, if you know somebody with the game or have a second copy, you can
use the second game to buy a gate seed and transfer it via bottle mail.

If the house is seeded, there is no such solution: when exiting a seeded house,
the character will still exit the original and be knocked out, and the
character will load outside the original house at startup. However, immediately
following the seeding, if you are still playing the game, you will be able to
access online and attempt to have the seed removed.

If some other building than the gate or house is seeded, you can attempt to
replace it by buying a seed of the blocked building, though this is not
recommended. I like to compare this to using a sledgehammer to fix a dent: it
might improve at first, and work a few times, but eventually you'll cause more
damage with the repair work than the original problem. Try to have the seed
removed before resorting to this.

On a similar topic of fixing seeds with seeds, it is possible to use UFO seeds
to remove buildings by collision (this can also be used as a form of vandalism
to remove the town gate). This causes another set of problems, though: when the
UFO disappears the following day, it leaves behind a sign board, and if an
animal neighbor then moves in, it can cause many glitches including possibly
bricking the game. This is not a recommended course of action.

IF YOUR GAME BRICKS*: DO NOT PANIC! There is a trick which sometimes works to
fix bricked games. If you know a date on which the game loaded (often the day
on which the seeds were added), then set the DS clock to this date! Sometimes,
a bricked game will temporarily load if the date is set back, at which point
you will be able to access the menu and select Restart Town.

Remember this: it is always better to restart your town than risk bricking your
cartridge! If the game bricks, you might have lost $35 (the cost of the
cartridge) in addition to your game progress. If you restart, all you lose is
your game progress.

*Please see the description of the Brick seed and 9th Neighbor House seed for
specific information on recovery from those seeds.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[02.5PRE] Precautions to take against seeding: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of this is common sense, and will be reiterated later in the general
precautions section. There are several tricks which are helpful to protecting
your town, and also just some common sense warnings of which everybody playing
online should be aware.

First of all: you can't be seeded if you don't let people into your town.
Obvious, I know, but if you're incautious about who you let in, you are playing
with fire. When in doubt, try to visit the other person's town - they may be
paranoid about your being a seeder as well, but do your best to convince them.

The most important thing to remember is this: when playing online, the game
saves only when you (the host) choose to, and when a person exits your town.
If you power off the game, not only will you not get Resetti, but you will also
revert any negative changes brought about by visitors while they were present.
Don't hesitate to power off if you suspect something - it's better to be safe.

Here is another useful tool: the conversation trick. If somebody is engaged in
a conversation with an NPC in your town, then guests will not be permitted to
enter or leave. If you suspect something has happened and want to prevent a
person leaving, talk to an NPC (or have a friend do it). If you have a friend
present who can open a conversation to prevent the offender leaving, you then
have a prime opportunity to inspect your town and see if your suspicions are
correct and/or what's wrong before you decide whether to power off or not.

If you are going to let unknown people into your town, give them a set of
guidelines first: do not run, and stay in sight at all times. If they then do
not adhere to your rules, power off the game. Watch your visitors closely, and
keep the sound turned up as loudly as you can so that you can hear it if they
drop an invisible building seed. If a person starts leaving without saying
goodbye, you might want to suspect something if you don't know the person - you
have a last opportunity to power off while "Somebody's leaving" is flashing on
the screen before the game starts saving.

It is recommended to only have one unknown/untrusted visitor in your town at a
time so that you can keep a close watch on the person. The more unknown
parties, the less able you will be to both detect a seeding, and know who the
culprit was after the fact. Be careful who you add to your Friends List, and if
you are especially nervous about somebody, have a trusted friend come to your
town as well to help watch and open a conversation should that become
necessary.

If you want to take extra precautions against seeding: covering the ground with
lots of items or patterns near the key buildings you want to protect will
prevent any items from being able to be dropped. Granted, they can be picked up
and removed, but this will give you more time to see exactly what is going on
and to decide on a course of action. There is also a type of seed which can be
created with Action Replay that merely blocks a place permanently from having
items dropped there, which can be used if you are extremely nervous.

REMEMBER: Paranoia, Powering Off, and Conversation. Those are your best tools
for avoiding becoming a victim of seeding.

Oh, and don't seed yourself! That'd be stupid, but lots of people do it...

=========================================================================
=[03GLI] Dangerous Glitches: =
=========================================================================

Aside from the dangers of seeding, there are a few glitches in the game which
can cause similar problems, i.e., permanent damage to a game file. If you know
of more than the ones I'm listing, feel free to send me an email and I will add
them to the FAQ.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[03.1PIT] The pitfall seed glitch: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a glitch about which there isn't very much knowledge. Rumors have been
circulating on the boards as to its existence for a long time, but it has been
confirmed to be true. There is a glitch which can cause the town gate to become
an alternate entrance to the museum without the use of seeds.

The glitch results when a guest appears to be stuck in a pitfall, and then
enters the gate from the middle left, where the root of the gate (or "seed" of
the gate, if you will) exists. The glitch is apparently repeatable, especially
when using AR codes for coordinate modification or "teleportation".

The best advice possible regarding this glitch is: DO NOT BURY PITFALL SEEDS IN
CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE TOWN GATE!

It is in theory possible for a person to execute this glitch when visiting a
town, but it seems unlikely, as it would take some time to set up. If you see
a person begin digging lots of holes/burying items near your town gate, power
off.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[03.2GBG] The garbage glitch: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a lesser-known glitch (I am one of the few who discovered it), and
therefore not much risk, but it is worth including as a player could easily
trigger it by accident.

Essentially, any item buried in the ground over which a building later appears
will remain buried there (any item merely on the ground will be sent to
Booker's Lost and Found, and any flowers or trees will simply be removed).
This becomes a problem because certain items, when buried, can have negative
effects on your town.

Namely, garbage items: the can, boot, and tyre. All of these items, whether on
the ground or buried, detract from your town status. Even one!!! of these items
will make it much more difficult to attain a perfect town, if it is possible at
all.

Here's the problem, and the glitch: if one of these items is buried near a
signboard, or near a Nook shop or house which has yet to expand, and then
either a neighbor moves in or the building expands on top of it, it will be
impossible to remove the item. If it is a neighbor's house, you will have to
wait for said neighbor to move out in order to have access to the item - which
could take weeks or months, or longer. If it's your house or Nook's shop, it
will NEVER be possible to remove the item, permanently impairing your ability
to obtain perfect town status and the golden watering can!

In short: be wary of buried items near signs, your house, or Nook's, especially
if there's an impending expansion. Never bury trash. It seems unlikely that a
vandal would do this when seeds are much simpler and more commonly known about,
but there's always the possibility.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[03.3FRC] Friend Code Glitches: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a few glitches involving friend codes which can be dangerous. The
simplest is this: while the game prompts you to enter a name and town name for
the person when you add them to your friend list, these fields mean nothing to
the game. If the code is correct, the person can visit, even if the name and
town are entered incorrectly. Therefore: if a person tells you the wrong name
and town information, you can observe a person in your town whom you do not
believe you added.

That was exploited at one point on Animal Crossing Community (ACC): somebody
would routinely use a cheating device to edit his character name and town name,
enter towns and act normally... and then, later, change the character's name to
Mario or Luigi, the town name to blank, and return to vandalize with seeds and
chop down trees. It took quite some time for people to learn what was going on.
The only advice to deal with this is: if you see somebody has done this, ask
about it, and watch them closely. Such a change confirms that a player has the
ability to hack his/her game and, thus, create seeds.

Another dangerous friend code glitch: it is sometimes possible for a player to
enter the town of another player who has deleted the first player's friend
code. While no explanation has been confirmed, this seems to be the result of
server lag of some sort (as in, Nintendo's server did not recognize the
deletion of the friend code until after confirming that the player was able to
visit). If this happens, simply power off, and wait a short period of time
before reconnecting. In the above scenario, there was very little time elapsed
between the player's first visit, the powering off and deletion of the friend
code, and then the second visit, and it does not seem as though such a glitch
could result unless that time is very short. However, this glitch has been
observed to occur even with a period of several hours between the visits; be
wary if this occurs, especially if the returning player is one whose code was
deleted due to his/her being suspected of malicious intent.

The "Friend Code of Death":
There is a friend code, composed entirely of ones and zeros, which, when added
to a friend roster, causes the game to freeze upon trying to connect to WFC. It
is believed to be the following code: 1010-1001-1010, but other variations may
exist as well. It is usually fairly obvious when such a code is being offered,
as well as easily correctible (simply delete the code), so this is more on the
level of minor mischief than vandalism. Nevertheless, it's worth knowing about.

These friend code glitches can be frightening, but it is best to be prepared.

=========================================================================
=[04NSD] Non-seeding issues: =
=========================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[04.1VAN] Minor vandalism: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just because there is the possibility of more severe vandalism through the use
of seeds does not mean that there is a lack of less destructive possibilities
for people to vandalize your town.

Trees can be chopped down, messages written on your notice board, items stolen,
letters written to your neighbors that they will then show off occasionally
(if the text is "adult" or otherwise unsuitable, this could be a problem), or
patterns placed in your Able's shop (once again, if for some reason they are
inappropriate, they are difficult to remove from animals once they start
wearing them).

There's also a hacked item called the Lost Item that can be a minor nuisance:
it's an item that looks like a leaf everywhere, even inside your house; it
can't be sold to Nook or put in the recycling bin (or even a dresser), so it's
very difficult to get rid of without using a cheating device. However, there is
a way to remove it: create an additional character, use that character to pick
up the Lost Item, and then delete the character. It's a bit of a hassle, but it
works. I'm not sure if it can be removed by getting it into the Lost and Found.
Not many people distribute these, though, so it's not much of an issue.

The only advice to give here is to watch your visitors carefully, and be
careful when saving the game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-[04.2ETQ] Online etiquette: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has recently come to my attention that many players are unaware of certain
expected behaviors when visiting another's town, specifically new players. I
am therefore writing this section to offer a few general pointers to those
newer people who may not yet have observed them, so that they do not receive
reputations as thieves, scammers, et cetera.

1. Stay in sight of the host unless given permission otherwise. If you
mysteriously run off, the host may suspect that you are going to seed, steal,
or do otherwise undesirable things. If the host has placed a boundary, such as
a line of patterns, and asked you not to cross it, it goes without saying that
you should not do so.

2. Walk, don't run, unless given permission. Many players grow flowers, either
for perfect town status or to produce hybrids, and will not appreciate your
running as it can cause them to be destroyed, and hybrid flowers can be
valuable. Also, if you walk, it's easier for the host to keep you in sight, and
that's a good thing.

3. Never take items from the ground without asking permission. Many players use
the ground to store items if their dresser is full or for various other
reasons, and it is considered thievery to take them. Items on the ground never
disappear, so there is no reason to assume that they are unwanted. Also, don't
take the money from money trees - they don't grow back.

4. When in doubt, ask permission. Most players will not mind you buying items
at Nook, harvesting fruit, digging up buried items, et cetera, as long as you
ask. Some people, however, may not want you to do these things, so always ask
first to avoid the possibility of causing trouble.

5. Never display your own patterns in somebody else's Ables' shop unless they
have explicitly asked you to.

6. Ask before writing letters to neighbors or posting on the message board.

That's all I can think of. Really, all it comes down to is this: ask permission
before doing anything you think might anger the person you're visiting. It
seems like common sense, and it might seem a little excessive at first, but
many players do not think to do this.

-[04.3SCM] Notes on trading and scamming: -
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scamming and theft is less common in this game than seeding, actually, but it
does occur, and so it's a good idea to take precautions against it.

When trading, the host should always be the person to drop his/her item(s)
first. It is a fairly simple matter, otherwise, for the host to save the game
after the guest drops his/her item, and then power off, thus effectively
stealing the item.

If worried about scamming, perform all trades at a reasonably far distance from
the town gate. This way, it would be impossible for the visitor to take the
items and quickly leave without paying for them. Although, it is also simple to
just power off if it looks like the person is leaving without upholding his/her
end of the bargain.

When paying for a service, such as selling turnips, buying a rare item from
Nook's/Ables' (i.e., Royal Crown, Crown, Throne, Halo), or using the hair
salon, always pay after having used the service or bought the item. Otherwise,
it is possible for the host to save after you drop the money and power off.

This is common sense, but don't leave rare items lying about your town. When
you aren't looking, it's quite possible that these items will be stolen,
especially when many members of the online community are used to giveaways and
free items. It's harder with hybrid flowers, and these are among the most
frequently stolen items, and the hardest to store - all you can really do is
watch your visitors and power off if they do anything suspicious.

When making multi-part trades (as in, spending an amount greater than
2,574,999 - the maximum amount of bells that can be carried ordinarily,
99,999 in the wallet, 15 bags of 99,000 and 10 more bags in letters - these
trades are usually for large numbers of items as well), do not give all of the
items at once. For instance, if trading a 12-item set for 5 million bells,
only give 6 items for the first 2.5 million, and wait for the rest of the
payment before handing over the rest. This also makes it so that if the trade
is interrupted due to connection difficulties, neither party will be in a
worse situation.

Use common sense, and remember these two facts: only the host can save, and
powering off will repair any damage.

=[05GEN] General advice and precautions: =
=========================================================================

A lot of this is common sense. Check the section on precautions against seeds
for more detailed information.

Firstly: your town can't be vandalized if nobody comes to visit! Granted, this
isn't ideal, but if you're really worried, just don't invite people you don't
trust to your town. When trading, you can try to convince the other party to
allow you to visit his/her town; granted, this could be difficult if you both
are thinking the same way, but it's something to try.

It's also helpful to try to gauge your visitors before allowing them into your
town. Talk with the person online if possible (i.e., on a message board such as
GameFAQs, AnimalCrossingCommunity, Animal Crossing Ahead, or AC:WW Legit), and
try to get to know the person a bit before letting him/her into your town if
possible. It's usually fairly obvious who the trustworthy ones are, but not
always; nevertheless, this is a good idea when possible.

If you do invite people to your town, only allow one new or untrusted person at
a time. The more people present, the more chance that you'll be caught unawares
and the less chance for you to know who the culprit is. If a person's name has
been circulated as a known seeder, don't let them visit you!

It can help to have a trusted friend in your town when somebody is visiting -
they can help you watch for potential sabotage, or can start a conversation so
you're free to explore your town and look for problems before the person
leaves.

DO NOT (and I stress) leave your town unattended while there are other players
present, unless you have played with them many times and know that they can be
trusted - and hesitate even then! Many players put their DS on sleep mode if
they are going to take a break; this is a very very bad move, as it gives
malicious players practically free rein to do whatever they want to your town,
and with impunity since you have no way to catch them at it or even prove that
it was them. If you need to leave your DS unattended, it is recommended to end
the Wi-fi session (Party's Over, etc) and come back to it after doing what you
must.

Also, don't leave your game unattended with open gates if you have
people on your friend list whom you do not trust; you never know who might drop
in and what they might do if they do so... which leads to the next point:

Don't leave people added to your Friends List after you're done with them
unless you trust them completely; that person could later come back and
vandalize your town without you realizing it.

Know what all the possibilities for vandalism are, and know what they look
like so you can detect them faster. Be familiar with the types of seeds and
with the sound they make when dropped, and always play with the sound turned
up.

Remember: the game saves only when you (the host) choose to save it. If you
think something's gone wrong, don't be afraid to power off the game immediately
- there are no negative consequences that will result; not even Resetti.

=========================================================================
=[06FAQ] Frequently asked questions: =
=========================================================================

Q: What are some things players say or do which might indicate that they may be
seeders?

A: This is by no means a definitive list, but here are some things to watch out
for:
-Players asking to save for no reason, or spamming "I want to save" via the
Start button.
-Players giving shaky reasoning for wanting to save, i.e., "i bought a hat".
-Players saying very little
-Players leaving your town without giving notice
-Players asking you to go inside a building and remain there
-Players using extremely poor grammar or 1337-speak

Q: What does a [insert seed name here] do?

A: Please go to the section of this guide entitled "Common types of seeds" and
read the entry for that specific type.

Q: What is a "not used" item, and why do people want them?

A: These are items which exist in the game, but are unattainable through normal
gameplay. They represent types of furniture, carpets, etc, that are used in the
default town buildings but were not intended to be accessible to players;
however, AR users have been able to gain access to and create them. Their name
in the inventory appears as "not used", and these include many types of items,
including but not limited to:
empty fossil stands in the museum, the flooring from Nook's, flower seed bags
for hybrid flowers, beehives, the Lost Item, invisible chairs, a four-leaf
clover which does not appear as a book, floating carpets and wallpapers...

Q: Seeds are so cool! I want one!

A: That's not a question, and I'm not going to tell you.

Feel free to email me, explopyro[at]verizon[dot]net with questions and I will
do my best to add them to the guide.

=[07UAR] Useful Action Replay codes =
=========================================================================

I didn't really want to do this, but I've thought better of it. There are some
codes which could be quite helpful in keeping your game safe, even though I
disapprove of Action Replay use in general. Don't ask me for help with using
these codes; I don't know how, and I don't really want to know how. Proceed
with caution.

These codes were all found on http://www.neoseeker.com, with the exception of
the "remove brick seed" codes which were written by ARP/Maniac/JPM31.

These codes are for US Version 1.0 and may not work with other versions of the
game. Proceed with caution.
To tell the US game version, check the back of your cartridge:
*ADMEN1XXX means your game is v1.1
*ADMEN0XXX means your game is v1.0
If you have the EURO or PAL versions, this does not apply.
(Be careful, as these numbers can rub off of the back of the game cartridge).

Why you would want to use these codes:

Master code: I have no idea, but it sounds important so I'm including it here.

Delete all data: If your cartridge was bricked, this should enable you to
create a new town.

Delete all inventory items: If for some reason you obtain a seed and want to
get rid of it, but don't feel like selling to Nook...

Remove brick seed: This code will remove all 9th-neighbour/"brick" seeds upon
starting up the game. There are three versions of the code posted here, one
for game v1.0, one for 1.1, and one for EU.

Delete all items in house: If you drop a seed inside your house, it will make
the space on which it was dropped permanently unusable, as well as counting
against the 24-items-per-room limit. Use this code to correct it (NOTE: this
code will not remove items which are on tables; any items which were on tables
will appear as if they were on the ground, but can have items pushed underneath
them).

You might want to check your tables, your ASCII, and the fact that its 79-letters long written in a font that line up, like courier new or something, becuase the letters definetly DON'T line up, like they should.

The fact is all jumbled and disorganized looking when I opened it in a webpage, you might want to also to see the things.

Make sure you read all of gamefaqs "how to submit a guide" info and all that, it's all under contribute.

Not that I'm flaming you or telling you how to write your guide, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to check the guidelines and your font and stuff........

Yeah, I have to try to fix that. I just typed it up in Notepad to begin with.

Yeah, I jsut checked the sapcing - it's definetly over 79 characters long on each line. You're supposed to turn word wrap off, use a font that directly lines up, and press enter every 79 characters (including spaces). You should check their guidelines, I read the entire thing before starting my FAQ.

For me, with wordwrap on it looked fine.
Much much better than the thread in the GameFAQs online board by the way.
Do you think they'll accept it there?
If they do, hopefully they'll think about policing it a bit.

Etc etc. smile.gif

Those were some of my hopes, Alexander... it's also that I got bored last night at 1 AM, couldn't sleep, and didn't have anything else to do, so I started writing it...

A bit pedantic, but I can get that way when proofreading. This may not be everything.

First paragraph of intro :
However, with online play comes risks, and more than one might expect that with a game like this.

I may be wrong, but I'd say "online play" is a singular noun. For the second half of the sentence, it depends on what "one" refers to : "more than one person might expect risks ..." or "more than one risk might be expected ...".

Second paragraph of 2.1 :
Most seeds' name field is blank

This may be grammatically correct, but the lack of a prepostion threw me. Not sure if "name field" should be plural, which then requires "are", or if it's better written as "For most seeds, the name field is blank" or "The name field for most seeds is blank" or "The name field is blank for most seeds".

Third paragraph of 2.1 :
Use objects instead of sprites. Flowers and weeds may be 2d sprites, but I think most everything else is a 3d model.

Hole seed description :
allowing such things as the planting of trees or flowers, and burying of items, on concrete

allowing such things as planting trees/flowers or burying items on concrete.

Bit more concise.

New Year's Countdown seed - Capitalize Eve.

Section 2.3 :
The most common form of seeds, and the most often used in vandalism, are building seeds and rock seeds

Added comma after vandalism.

Section 4 :
The "Lost Item". Nook won't take it at all, even with a bunch of other items? If it can't be put in the recycling bin, what about getting it into the Lost and Found? Would it cause a problem if Redd's tent appears on top of it?

Also, for layout of the FAQ, you may want to try out TextPad. Word wrap can be toggled on and off, and there are many ways to handle them. You can configure a document class (say text files) or a specific file to word wrap at 79 lines, and force an explicit line break when saving. If you want to reword a paragraph, when you open a file there is a command (Reformat under the edit menu, or Ctrl-Shift-J) that will remove the forced line breaks from the currently selected text or from the "paragraph" (separated by blank lines) the cursor is currently in.

Thanks Bloomy. I'll fix those when I get the chance, I haven't uploaded it yet and won't until I can get access to the computer I wrote it on again - I'm posting this from my laptop.

About the Lost Item: I'll add those questions and say I'm unsure about them. I know that Nook won't take it at all - kind of like money bags, and I'd imagine it treats it like a bug or fish regarding the recycling bin and dressers. I can't see there being a problem getting it into the lost and found, though, and if there were, it would probably just disappear. I don't really know, though, seeing as I avoid them like the plague - I have no desire to be stuck with a useless item I can't get rid of.

As for the formatting, I fixed it manually in Notepad. Took a while, but it's already done?

Updated, and the new version is now attached to the original post.

Posted it to GameFAQs as well; let's hope it gets through.

Looks good. You may want a hacker(like A Random Person) to help you expand it since he probably knows more about seeds.

Also, a minor mistake you made was misspelling "tire" in section 03.2GBG.

Edit: You don't have too much info on the brick seed. Although I don't know too much about the seed, I've talked to PorkyPine himself about this seed.

The seed can be planted anywhere outside. As soon as you enter and exit a building when the seed is planted, the screen turns black. There is no need to save for damage to be caused. Leaving your game on longer will further damage the game, SO IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF IF THE SCREEN IS BLACK FOR A SUSPICIOUSLY LONG TIME. Leaving it on for a couple minutes will let it eat away at the game. The game CAN be saved from being bricked if you power off in time(a couple seconds I assume). If you suspect you've been seeded, do not enter or exit buildings. Just power off.

Thank you, LingLing. If my FAQ gets added, I'll update it to 1.01 and add that bit of information... if it doesn't, I'll add the information and try to submit it again I suppose.

Oh, and I spell tyre the British way =O
I doubt that's a huge problem...

JP, a couple questions for you...

Azure tells me that tree (stump) seeds on concrete can't be dug up with the shovel, but I always thought that they could. Would you mind confirming this one way or another for me?

Also, if an item is buried on concrete via a hole seed, can it be dug up?

Oh, I don't really know too much about international English. >.>;;
But don't you live on the east coast? That's what I thought at least. I'm not sure where I heard it from, so I dunno.

Yeah, I do live on the East Coast, and oddly enough I haven't spent any substantial amount of time anywhere else. However, for some reason I do have tendencies to spell things the British way and some people have told me that they think I sound English... I think they're crazy, myself.

Haha. That's kinda strange. Do you talk to people in Britain through writing often? I have two British friends. Oddly, they spell things kinda differently... Maybe it is because one of them was originally from Russia.
